They’ve used the Olympics as an opportunity to launch their territory grabs not once but three bloody times: Georgia, Crimea, and now Ukraine. If anything they’ll try and nab something else rather than agree to a ceasefire. Ridiculous.

Won't happen because why would they do that

[–] Maalus@lemmy.world 23 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Well, historically olympics were supposed to be a time of peace and some countries did try to adhere to that. Russia though? No chance.

As a sibling said the Olympics has recently been invading season for Russia.

Why are they even invited?

Fucking hell Macron is consistently such a joke.

“Oh Russia please stop your genocide so we can have a picture perfect little Olympic Games, we spent so much money on it and all we care about is that you don’t distract from the media attention. You can continue as soon as it’s over please kthxbye”

It's a tradition that spans centuries, not something that Macron thought up. It's called the Olympic Truce, check it out.

Wikipedia says it was only bought back in ‘93 and that Russia has violated it 3 times since.

Sounds like it’s tradition for Russia to ignore it.

The hope is that once a ceasefire is established, that this will hold and that hostilities will not commence after

[–] Maalus@lemmy.world 12 points 7 months ago

It's not that, it's specifically for the Olympic games so the athletes have a chance to go and come back, and nobody is attacked during. Obviously, the only country violating that in modern history, is Russia.

That is a foolish thing to hope for

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Aaahhh. Hold on.... My sides ... Hahahahaha.... Ok ok.... Ok... Phwew! Hehe...

I thought you were serious for a second.. no.... heh... See, conservatives like Putin cannot be stopped by pacifism. That's never happened in all of human history. Historically, conservatism has only been stopped by force.

That was funny, though!
