I like the castle one. I think it has a picture of a dude pooping into a long chute that ejects the excrement outside the castle wall.

[–] Someonedifferent@sh.itjust.works 26 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I remember that picture too!

[–] NegativeLookBehind@lemmy.world 12 points 6 months ago (1 children)

You and me bud, kindred spirits.

[–] criitz@reddthat.com 13 points 6 months ago (1 children)

This poop chute is the only thing I remember about these books

[–] cybersandwich@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

It's the only thing you need to remember

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Wasn't that Stephen Biesty's Castle book?

[–] NegativeLookBehind@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Maybe it was. I just wish I had a castle with a poop chute in it :(

[–] GeorgeTheFourth@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Don't forget the poop shoveling pit at the bottom

[–] NegativeLookBehind@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

Oh yeah, there was a guy down there shoveling it!

I’m not sure if these are widely known, but I am a big fan of Stephen Biesty’s cross section books. I borrowed those from the library all the time. And bought them as an adult! They’re fun reads and very informative. Everyone who picks one up will end up smiling when they read them.

They were widely known, at least in my family. My brother and I went nuts for those books. The castle one even showed the facilities, naked asses and all. Funny shit when you're 10.

Biesty includes a pooping figure in literally every drawing where a bathroom can feasibly be accommodated. Sometimes several. It’s basically his signature move.

Not that I would do anything different mind you. Even adult me always looks for the Signature Pooper.

This was also my jam as a kid when visiting the public library. The castle book and Incredible Cross-Sections really blew my mind as a kid.

[–] FinishingDutch@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

That one in particular was awesome! I should pick up the modern version of that one of these days.

The anatomy book is actually how I learned how procreation worked.

I literally have the Gem Stones one near me on my bed right now. They really are the best.

[–] mihnt@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

Rocks and Minerals were my jam. Loved that book.

[–] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 months ago

DK were (and are?) great

The Time & Space one is certainly mind blowing for my junior high school self.

I think I had the "Human Body" one and a couple others. Cool books.

[–] mynamesnotrick@lemmy.zip 7 points 6 months ago

Just got ran over by the nostalgia truck. Damn. That was cool feeling. I think the castle one was my favorite.

[–] SzethFriendOfNimi@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

Popular Mechanics where they’d do something like this with a sub, harrier jet, bullet train, etc

[–] CassowaryTom@lemmy.one 7 points 6 months ago

Is there a lot of nostalgia for these? I have the castle one, but it just sort of appeared in my bookshelf one day.

[–] Synthuir@lemmy.ml 5 points 6 months ago

AND. THEIR. VIDEOS!

nostalgia hit

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 3 points 6 months ago

Astronomy, I believe it was called, is my favorite.

[–] frickineh@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Dinosaurs and castles. Honestly, anything with history was probably high on the list. I was already a big history dork from basically the time I could read.

[–] soar160@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

I checked out the Castle book so much the librarian practically had it ready for me as I walked throttle door.

[–] _Gandalf_the_Black_@feddit.de 2 points 6 months ago

I loved looking at the illustrations in those and coming up with stories about them in my head

[–] psmgx@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

They had one about dogs that was fun. I think I had the arms and armor ones too

[–] XTornado@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Oh I think I had the explorers one but it was an Spanish version, although maybe it was a copycat or something can't remember the details.

[–] Canadian_Cabinet@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Confirmo que había unas versiones en español, no creo que fuesen falsas. En España, por lo menos

[–] XTornado@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 months ago

Gracias por confirmar... Lo busque en casa pero se habrá perdido o algo hace mucho tiempo....

In middle school in the 80s I was really into comics and dungeons and dragons and at lunch I'd go to the library and read books like these about medieval weapons and old guns, it was like a fantasy pardise
