Assuming he was handing out the standard Madagascar currency to those kids, he was paying about 10 cents US per spider.
I can't seem to find prices on anything in Madagascar outside the major cities, but based on the city pricing, that's probably equivalent to paying the kids a dollar or two each in local markets.
