Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
(This list may get expanded when necessary.)
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

Russians will be back if they think they can win.
That's more a consequence of Russian domestic propaganda than French bluster. If you showed a Russian the end result of the Ukraine War four years ago, they'd call you a liar and turn up the dial on TASS to drown you out.
At the same time, this war has been miserable for everyone. "We have to keep shooting until we can trust those evil orks, which we will never do!" isn't a strategy that will do anything but escalate the conflict. Which - hey, if you're the world's second largest weapons exporter staring down a recessionary global economy - might seem pretty good. But its not great for what's left of Ukraine or what's left of Russia or for anyone else in Eastern Europe, long term.
Here's a secret though: Russia can simply go home. Just say they'll withdraw to the pre-2014 borders and I will totally guarantee Ukraine will sign a peace agreement.
Ukraine isn't the one escalating, and they're not the one being unreasonable. Russia is.
Do you seriously believe that Ukrainians, radicalized by a three year long horrifyingly bloody conflict, are going to stop trying to fling explosive drones into Moscow office buildings if Russians all simultaneously decamped from Oblasts tomorrow?
Nevermind the fact that you're dealing with people who are fully pilled on their own ideology. Try telling an Israeli that the war with Palestine can end when they go back to the 1948 borders. See how they respond.
Because they're in retreat. They don't have the bodies or the bullets to keep fighting independent of NATO support. But France seems content to ratchet tensions (not coincidentally thanks to the economic windfall this war has produced for them) regardless of what Zelenskyy thinks. So I guess people get to keep dying.
I have regular contact with someone from Ukraine who leads a team working towards the war effort and as anecdotal as it is, him and his team want nothing more than for Russia to leave, their family to return and for life to go back to normal.
I have a Palestinian friend whose parents have been saying the same thing since 1948. I'm sure you could look for a few Yugoslavians or El Salvadorians or Koreans who feel the same way.
But those wounds aren't going to vanish the day everyone puts their knives away.
Are you trying to sketch a world where poor russia is fighting for it's survival as a nation? Poor Russia has no choice but to keep invading a sovereign nation they invaded, because otherwise that sovereign nation might show their anger?
You know what, IF russia pulls back to their <2014 borders, and IF they stop attacking and provoking and IF they pay reparations for every house and hospital they destroyed, then they should be praising god on their bare knees that that will suffice and Ukraine is willing to settle for being better than Russia and not murdering hundreds of thousands of civilians like Russia did.
Known bootlicker. They've been spewing pro russia bullshit since I've joined almost 2 years ago.
Hey look! An ignorant creature!
Yeah, it's a shame Russia HAD to invade crimea and now further into Ukraine, if only they had another choice.
