With the selection of former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum as the candidate of the country’s ruling party in next June’s election, Mexico will for the first time have time two women from its main political movements competing for the presidency.

Sheinbaum, as well as the opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez, have insisted that Mexico is ready to be led by a woman, but it will not be an easy path.

On Wednesday night, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s Morena party announced that Sheinbaum had defeated five internal party rivals – all men. López Obrador has put women in important positions in his Cabinet and been a mentor for Sheinbaum, even while being accused at times of male chauvinism.

Mexico also just legalized abortion nationwide and they already have a form of universal healthcare. Soon people will be crossing the Rio Grande in the other direction.

Lots of people already go to Mexico for healthcare and prescription drugs because it's so much cheaper.

Canada too. We were going on vacation to Niagara Falls and I had some signs I was developing another kidney stone (false alarm, thankfully) and my wife said maybe we shouldn't go. I told her we'd be in a country with national healthcare and a terrific medical system. Why would I be worried about it?

Maybe go to Canada instead for medication. Mexico has a problem with counterfeit pills.

Unfortunately they (legally) can't because Texas is adding / already has laws which makes it illegal to even drive through areas if you are planning on getting and abortion at your destination.

What if it wasn't "planned" you travel to Mexico on vacation and oops I had an abortion while drunk one night.

[–] electrogamerman@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

If people get pregnant the same way, I dont see why they cant get an abortion the same way. Approved!

Abortion is decriminalised, so it's still not legal but it falls under civil law which is not as harsh as criminal law.

Edit: I misread the article, you can legally get an abortion at federal health facilities. I don't know about state health facilities.
