I understand why they have the requirement: They want a 3d model of your face that they know is good enough so that they can make the facial interface.
What I don't understand is why do they not accept a 3d model you create yourself? Using photogrammetry and a friend, it would not be too difficult to get a good 3d model of your face. Heck, they could even do a service where you send the photos of your face directly to Bigscreen where they process it for an extra fee. Boom, now there is no iPhone requirement to buy the product.
I mean, that's totally the point. Apple loves their walled garden.
I don’t know that it is. BigscreenVR is not an Apple product, so your comment doesn’t feel particularly relevant.
They probably chose iPhones because they’re the most common device that has the capacity to get a 3D scan of someone’s face. They’re probably able to get semi-consistent results with this approach, whereas opening things up to the wide variety of IR devices in laptops and Android phones would increase the number of variables and make OP’s frustrating experience even more common.
Oh, the way it was talked about I thought BigscreenVR was an apple product. My bad.
