  • Garnet: Running Debian Sid, so affected by vulnerability; hastily downgraded to 5.4.5
  • Amethyst: FreeBSD still ships 5.4.x
  • Pearl: Obsolete and currently unused hardware, so Linux hasn't been updated since October and OSX hasn't been updated since 2009.
  • Pearl-II: Void Linux still ships with 5.4.x, and the malware requires glibc anyway (I'm running musl); macOS partition still has 5.4.x (which is strange, given that I use pkgsrc, which shipped 5.6.x)
  • LapisLazuli: According to Mageia, everything's fine
  • Spinel: Running Raspbian Stable, which still ships 5.4.x

Well, since I started using the naming scheme, I have several lines of machines. Pearl-II (MacBookPro11,1; 2014) is the successor of Pearl (MacBook2,1; 2007), both of which are part of the Pearl line.

Lengthy explanation

Essentially:

  • Garnet - Main machine, which should be the most powerful if possible.
  • Amethyst - My ThinkPad (or equivalent) with as much GNU or BSD software and firmware as possible. If I were to go to an FSF convention, this would be the machine I bring with me.
  • Pearl - My MacBook, dual-booting Linux and the latest supported version of macOS.
  • LapisLazuli - "The Other One". This machine is the one I use for experimenting, or for leaving at other people's houses if I visit a lot. As of 01/04/24, this one is probably due an upgrade, but I'll keep using it until Mageia drops x86_64-v1.
  • Spinel - My SBC. Currently a Raspberry Pi 3B+, but Spinel-II should be just around the corner.
  • Peridot - My tablet (because Peridot from SU has a tablet). Unfortunately, I chose to buy a crappy £80 Android tablet from Argos, so I avoid using this machine if I can help it.
  • Carnelian - My phone. Currently an iPhone SE (Carnelian-II), but Carnelian-III will be something with DivestOS, I am sure.
  • Larimar - My PineTime.

I also use the diamonds for my family's devices, if I need to assign hostnames; and Jasper for any Windows devices or VMs I have to use.

Also, I only bought three of these devices: Garnet, Peridot, and Larimar. The rest I was given by my uncle over the course of about a decade. Essentially, whenever a line gets an upgrade, the other lines rearrange. For example, when I was given Pearl-II last month, it replaced Amethyst as the machine I take to sixth form, so Amethyst replaced Lapis, Lapis replaced the original Pearl, and the original Pearl was retired.

Before I started using this, I just used to use random names that had something to do with the OS, so my ThinkPad was "Nemesis" and my main machine was "Archangel".
