In the background of the one pic you can see one of the abandoned schoolhouses in the distance. 
Buckshot creating a bunch of smaller holes that in turn created one big failure.
Could be, or it was where most of the shots were concentrated I guess. Most of the guys around here are the deer hunting sort, so a lot of things end up with practice holes.
