Spent last two years trying to make my kid understand this, forcing a bit, being subtle, trying to explain, being a bit of an obnoxious parent ...

Last week he told me he's doing the same work, with less work, and And having the weekend free.

Do it parents. For you also it will be as rewarding.

It is hard for both of you, so never forget it, be lenient when needed.
