Well, I'm guessing light pollution wasn't a problem in 19th century Poland. That was just what you saw when you looked up on a clear night.

There were actually two 'Wigtown Martyrs', Margaret Wilson (18) and Margaret McLachlan (63). I guess Millais picked the young pretty one.

I did wonder whether this post needed a NSFW tag.

I can't resist pointing out this slightly naughty homage by Sylvie Jones.

Yes, like most people I associated him with his wonderful art nouveau posters and only discovered his historical work quite recently.

Artists' muses often seem to have at least one titty hanging out. I assume they can only afford really shoddy clothing.

I hadn't really picked up on who the main character was. Now I can see the model's eyes are directed at her.

Well, I'm posting from lemmyNSFW and it flags everything NSFW by default. And I'm lazy.

I don't see this as a celebration of the glorious revolution, it's a bit more nuanced than that. There's an obvious nod to the October Revolution, but there is also the inclusion of the Marshall amplifier and electric guitar; potent symbols of western culture. The mood seems deliberately ambiguous. Is she nostalgic for the past or is the calendar an unpleasant reminder of how things were?
