The democratic primary was ranked choice. The general election is still the old broken system.

Ok, nevermind. I guess we'll just do nothing. 🙄

Elon Musk is done at DOGE, but we're just getting started.

Elon is still deeply tied to the Trump regime, still fueling conspiracies and fascist rhetoric, and still using his immense wealth to warp government policy and buy elections around the globe.

On June 28—Elon's birthday—let's celebrate everything we've achieved and a recommit to the long fight still ahead.

And our birthday gift to the Broligarch in Chief? A global party with one powerful message: Musk Must Fall.

He wants to flood the FPTP ballot with progressive and centrist candidates so that those votes are spread so thin, the single conservative candidate is a shoe in with a landslide 3% of the votes.

I mean, yay, but...

an estimated 80% of ballots counted.

That's just the first round, right? Does he not understand how RCV works? Unless his team already knows who everyone's second and third choices are, it's not remotely over yet. What am I missing?

The judge making this determination is an idiot.

The judge hasn't ruled on the piracy question yet. The only thing that the judge has ruled on is, if you legally own a copy of a book, then you can use it for a variety of purposes, including training an AI.

"But they didn't own the books!"

Right. That's the part that's still going to trial.

[–] nulluser@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Right, and that's the, "but faces trial over damages for millions of pirated works," part that's still up in the air.

On the whole, I agree. Usually wouldn't consider them.

However, a few years ago I bought a rather expensive item (several thousand dollars) and I was ready to just pay for it outright, but one of the payment options was 0% financing though one of these pay later companies with payments spread out over 4 years. So, I did that a put the money in a safe investment.

So I essentially got two discounts on the purchase. 1) the growth in the investment means I'm less out of pocket on the purchase, and 2) due to inflation, the dollars I'm using now to make payments are technically worth less than they were three years ago.

There's been a few times in my life that I've been able to take advantage of 0% financing for large purchases and I've never regretted it. But, for the strategy to work, you have to A) be willing and able to just buy the thing outright, without financing (the financing can't be a factor in your decision), and B) have the self control to not touch the invested money to make some other impulse buy.

ETA, another thing to watch out for is smoke and mirrors, where they claim 0% financing, but they've really just raised the price to cover what they would have made in interest charges, and then have a "discount for cash" type offer where you pay less if you don't finance. Usually better to not finance in those scenarios.

How long before weird or dangerous incidents start to happen?

Well...

one gaggle of Tesla influencers was dropped off directly in an intersection

I had the same question. It's buried in the next paragraph.

In this case, however, it appears the Tesla was able to drive along the tracks for a while before getting stuck.

“There is a mayoral primary coming up this week where one of the candidates does not believe ~~the Jewish state~~ any Palestinian has a right to exist,” said Sam Sutton, the senator from Brooklyn.

Fixed it for you, Sam.

Obligatory Technology Connections video about dehumidifiers. Hint: You might be using it wrong.

When I lived right off the water

Except that one. That one was probably being used right. But, [ gestures to everyone else ] y'all might learn something from the video and save yourselves a ton of money in otherwise wasted energy.

Oh, darn! If only we'd thought of that sooner! Hold my beer for a moment while I go push the "enact a form of ranked-choice or instant-runnoff" button, that's just been sitting there this whole time. Why didn't you suggest that sooner? It would have saved everyone so much trouble.

June 4 (Reuters) - Karine Jean-Pierre, who was former President Joe Biden's press secretary at the White House from 2022 until 2025, has left the Democratic Party and is now an independent, according to the publisher of her forthcoming book.

"We need to be clear-eyed and questioning, rather than blindly loyal and obedient as we may have been in the past," she was quoted as saying by Legacy Lit, part of the Hachette Book Group, that will release her book 'Independent' in October.

The moderators of a pro-artificial intelligence Reddit community announced that they have been quietly banning “a bunch of schizoposters” who believe “they've made some sort of incredible discovery or created a god or become a god,” highlighting a new type of chatbot-fueled delusion that started getting attention in early May.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House will fix errors in a much-anticipated federal government report spearheaded by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which decried America’s food supply, pesticides and prescription drugs.

Kennedy’s wide-ranging “Make America Healthy Again” report, released last week, cited hundreds of studies, but a closer look by the news organization NOTUS found that some of those studies did not actually exist.

Asked about the report’s problems, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the report will be updated.
