Thank God... Or the EU regulations... Whichever.

Its nuts that during the Obama admin, all anyone cared about was the threat of zero privacy. Now everyone in the US has surrendered to it, because our politicians have sold our digital privacy rights to the tech companies.

I dont think anything is necessary, other than upgrading your storage. I considered an SD card, and decided the price break was just better overall for an ssd. I got a western digital 512 for like 55 bucks I think.

The hardest part of the swap was getting the case apart. I did watch a couple of videos for tips before I did it though... it made it pretty painless. the biggest pro tip was to start the separation of the case by one of the trigger buttons, and just run a credit card along it to pop the tabs. Another suggestion is if you dont have a set of tiny screwdrivers, i would recommend getting a cheapo kit. I had one I made due with, but even it was slightly too big for the task.

Like I said, I would watch a couple of vids so you know what to do as you proceed, how to flash the new ssd with the os, etc. It really isnt that hard. I am not too terribly of a tech savvy person and was able to do it.

I just got the bottom dollar deck, and it came with a case btw. I bought a cheap dock off of Aliexpress and it works fine. I think I paid under $25 for it.. i am certain you could probably get the same one on amazon for ~the same price. I definitely wouldnt buy the valve dock. If you dont have a controller, the world is your oyster. I bought a cheapo $30 bitdo.

I think the brand of screen protector I bought was Ivoler, and it was a very easy install... it came with a "frame" to square the glass install.

Good luck, i have been enjoying mine.

i realize this is sort of an oddball post, but thought I would put it out there to see if anyone has any advice... I posted a couple of weeks ago, requesting advice for a controller... after reading the many responses (thanks to the community!) I went with the cheapo $30 8bitdo wireless option. I finally got my dock for the deck yesterday and hooked it up. I played a little Chained Echo, then decided to try Super Metroid through emudeck. I got it working just fine... except for one big issue.. When you hit start to bring up the map... it brings it up like it should... but when you press start again to go back to the game, it doesnt recognize it. If I go out and check the controller, to make sure the start push is still mapable (to make certain it is still functioning) it recognizes it just fine.. but in the game, it only seems to work once.

Is there something I am overlooking with this? Do any of you guys out there have any advice?

Thanks everyone for their responses! I eventually pulled the trigger on a $29 8bitdo wired/wireless controller!

I was looking at this game, and it was what literally made me pull the trigger on a steamdeck... It should be arriving today, and i hope to have the ssd swapped, reimaged, and get that installed so i can play some this evening!

Ill be getting mine later this week, and that screw issue is not what i wanted to hear.

I just bought the base version, and it should be here next week. I bought a 20 dollar docking station from AliExpress, a 54 dollar 512gb ssd from amazon, and an aftermarket antiglare/screen protector. I am still well under what I would have spent for the highest tier.

Ive been wanting a mobile gaming platform, and i could no longer deny the steamdeck. It beings the steamgames i would like to play from a couch and adds the options for emulators my pi couldnt handle. I also feel like the next gen will have a mich higher price point, as well as more options that would only range higher and higher... So i figured now is as good of a time as any.

I wondered if anyone had any experience with a controller that they used while docked? If the 20-30 8bitdo is as good as a one of the premium controllers, id prefer to save some money, since I don't own a console. If thought I'd ask the community, to see if anyone had any experience to share!
