Saturday’s march was the 19th national demonstration for Palestine since the start of the war last October and the first time a pro-Palestine march has been held in the vicinity of the Israeli embassy in South Kensington.

According to the report, Murdoch, the 93-year-old patriarch, filed a petition late last year to amend the irrevocable family trust that would have given equal voting shares to Murdoch’s eldest four children. Instead, Murdoch wanted to grant exclusive control to his eldest son and chosen successor Lachlan, according to The Times.

Lachlan, who is more politically aligned with his father’s conservative views than his siblings, took over as chairman of Fox Corporation and News Corporation last September. Citing the court documents, which CNN has not independently seen, the Times reported that Murdoch felt handing Lachlan control of the media businesses he founded would better protect their value following his death by maintaining its right-wing editorial bent.

But the entire process has been completely sealed in Nevada, with even the existence of the proceedings kept in secret.

Asked later whether the task force would cross the Taiwan Strait on its way to its next stop in Manila, Shulz told reporters that to telegraph the ships' plans would violate operational security.

While the U.S. and other countries have sent warships through the narrow strait in recent weeks, it would be the German navy's first such passage since 2002.

Last month Germany joined the U.S.-led United Nations Command (UNC) in South Korea that helps police the heavily fortified border with North Korea and has committed to defend the South in the event of a war.

The analysis found that oil companies have long influenced universities to focus on climate efforts that would enshrine a future for fossil fuels, despite experts' repeated warnings that the world must stop burning coal, oil and gas to avert the worst climate impacts.

"The science has been telling us that fossil fuel phase-out is the No 1 thing that we need to focus on, but within our universities, there's very little research on how to do fossil fuel phase-out," said Jennie Stephens, a climate justice professor at Maynooth University in Ireland and study co-author. "This provides some explanation for why society has been so ineffective and inadequate in our responses to the climate crisis."

Despite the authors’ efforts, the scope of fossil fuel funding on campus remains unclear because the vast majority of university research centers do not disclose their donors publicly. One 2023 report from the non-profit Data for Progress found that fossil fuel companies donated at least $700m to 27 US universities over the past decade, but the authors noted this was almost certainly an undercount.

In his written representation, Abdelrazik's lawyer Paul Champ argues the witnesses are "very experienced dealing with highly confidential matters" and calls the suggestion that they might blurt out classified information "speculative at best."

"The open court principle is especially important in this case because it involves allegations of malfeasance and complicity in serious human rights abuses by senior government officials," he writes.

"There is a strong public interest in the public hearing government witnesses defend their actions in this case."

CBC News is seeking to intervene in the case, arguing the Crown's motion "would unjustifiably limit the open court principle and infringe upon the freedoms of expression and of the press."

The Globe requested records and communications used to produce the statement and its conclusion on the day of its publication. Under the federal Access to Information Act, institutions have 30 days to respond to requests, which can be extended. Defence did not respond to the request nor did it give notice of an extension.

Last year, The Globe published Secret Canada, an investigation into the country's faltering access to information system. Among other findings, Secret Canada showed that government departments, at all levels, routinely flout their legal obligations without consequences and fail to respond to requesters within the required time limits.

In its latest annual report, Defence said it responded to access to information requests within legal time limits 61.7 per cent of the time in 2022-23, a decrease from the previous year. Overall, Ottawa said federal institutions responded within legal time limits to 72.3 per cent of requests that year.
