What.... what was in the 4th chapter?

[–] Mercuri@ani.social 2 points 1 week ago

I mean, the PV teases that there's a "steam removed" version of the PV coming soon so.... probably ecchi

lol. But look! He clearly turns into Voltron!

Green, Yellow, Blue, Pink and Red combine

[–] Mercuri@ani.social 3 points 1 week ago

Okay, so this looks adorable. I'm definitely going to give it a try.

It's literally a Power Rangers isekai. How does he transform into Voltron if he's the only one that got isekai'd though?

Haha, I love this. BTW, you've totally convinced me to read Bookworm. I love the anime anyway but you talking about it makes me want to get more Myne/Rosemyne.

She gets completely blindsided when someone who has all the reason in the world to hate her schemes against her and doesn’t seem to have a personal motivation for what she does other than to fulfill her daily evil quota

And THAT is why I nominated Vicius for #1 villain this year! Because before she WAS one dimensional and seemed evil just for the sake of being evil and to foil the MC. However in Book 11 a lot of her machinations and motivations are revealed. And yes, she's still awful self-obsessed evil garbage but now you can see how all her plotting meshed together for her goals (yes, she has actual goals!). Granted, it's maybe not the most mind-blowing reveal ever but it was still a big leap for her character development.

No, compare this with my, clearly far superior pick!

How you worded this... perfection.

he is the hero of the story if you only shift the POV by a fraction of a degree.

Okay, I admit I like that. I think you might have convinced me.

ps.: Fran & Teacher is a good pick

Right?!

Granted, not Clarissa & Hartmut levels of good, but respectable nonetheless.

PPPSSSSSHHHHFFFFFFTTTT.... look, I'll read it, okay. I promise. But you'll never convince me Fran & Teacher aren't #1 ;)

I also nominated my favorite series for (almost) everything where thought it applied: Reincarnated as a Sword, Failure Frame, & Trapped in a Dating Sim. Honestly I felt a little biased focusing on those three but hey, whatever. At the very least, let me try to justify a few of my claims.

For best art, I nominated KWKM (Failure Frame) and Llo (Reincarnated as a Sword). From all the light novels I have read, their art stands above the rest. The level of detail is striking and it often captures the specifics of the book as well. For instance, it's not uncommon for artists to keep the characters in the same outfits in every depiction. Or to have the art only loosely tie to the prose. Or have the art be more of a sketch than a full render. I don't feel that's the case with these two and it comes across like they're always giving 100%. Here are a couple examples.

KWKM:

I love that it's not just a character on a plain background for this color insert, but really captures the whole scene. The dress is extravagant and the emotion on Seras' face is capture perfectly.

Llo:

Llo's art style is, IMHO, extremely cute. Every depiction of Fran is both adorable and cool. They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but I got into Reincarnated as a Sword in part because Llo's amazing art captured my attention.

For best Duo, I just want to argue for my #1 pick: Fran and Teacher (Reincarnated as a Sword). Their relationship is the driving force of the whole series and in the latest volumes that hasn't changed. Their personalities are deep, the character development extensive, and despite being very different they mesh perfectly together and it never feels forced.

For best antagonist I'm also just going to argue my #1 pick: Goddess Vicius (Failure Frame). She was always an antagonist in the series but the volumes released this year really exposed the true extent of her depravity and maliciousness. Despite being a Goddess of unparalleled beauty, you end up loathing her entirely. I love that mismatch of traits.

Right? Whether her brainwashing is intentional or not has been a question from the start. Sounds like we might finally get some answers.

Oh, I just realized something. Liz is the golden rose. Duke is the blue rose. I suspect Alicia is the black rose. Since both Duke and Alicia seem capable of breaking Liz's hold on people, I bet that has something to do with it.

After the lackluster episode last week, we finally get another pretty good episode. It's got all the things we want! Cool Villainess moments! Liz's followers being big meanies! Prince Duke being creepy! Mel doting on Ali-Ali! Oh, and plot. That's right, the plot actually moves a few steps.

We get reminded that Laval has been doing... SOMETHING in the background to antagonize the kingdom. Seriously, for some kind of maleficent nation their schemes are as deep as TPing a house. And of course it all comes back to Roana. It's like all of the world's problems have to end up there or something.

Then we see Liz use both her light and dark side powers to manipulate Gill and Ms. Freckles, respectively. Ms. Freckles decides to cut some hair without a license, which is a big no-no. So Alicia steps in and sets the new fashion trend.

@rikka@ani.social

I found this interesting because Alicia's really cool Villainess moment there actually served to gain her supporters and loosen Liz's stranglehold on the students. We also see Duke able to pull Gill out of the brainwashing. It really makes me wonder what the special conditions for Liz's spell actually are.

Speaking of Liz's spell, we see Mel at the end discovering just what ability Liz has been using this entire time!

And then of course the episode ends. I'm really looking forward to the reveal next week!

I hate the boys and girls can’t be friends trope that pops up in media.

Same. I think if the title was just "Can Friendship Between Men and Women Exist?" it would be fine since it's leaving it open, but the "(No, it doesn't!)" answer spoils it.

Also, I feel like the characters look just like characters from another anime. Or it could just be that they're so generic as to be indistinguishable from other blue-hair anime girls/black hair anime boy.

I finally caught up on the last couple episodes. I was worried after the Marcus arc this anime was going to get sour, but no, I actually really like where this is going, even if they're just searching for a McGuffin by means of the magic school trope. I guess I just like seeing Veltol put in "normal" situations and then acting super ridiculous.

I must admit the "familiar-looking employee" caught me by surprise. Usually I can see stuff like that coming but in this case it blindsided me. "Lets get the one with the biggest boobs" XD

Hmmm... you do have very valid points.

And Noel’s Strategist subclass/specialization seemed to come with skills that were tailor made to defeat such a foe, or was it vice versa?

If we take into account that Noel was manipulating things behind the scenes, it makes more sense. But you're right, it does feel like lazy writing.

In particular, I don’t recall the Link ability being revealed earlier, so it feels like a deus ex machina.

Oh yeah, I found that totally odd as well. They definitely didn't reveal it before. And they had supposedly been practicing a lot with it so it definitely felt like they pulled it out of nowhere. Definitely the worst part of the episode. I guess it didn't affect my judgement as much because I assumed Noel would pull something out of his butt anyway? He had already foreseen Blue Beyond winning the challenge.

Conversely, Leon’s supposed to be this amazing Talker, same class as Noel, and same B rank I think(?), so what was his subclass/specialization, what abilities came with that and why weren’t they useful?

Leon's a Knight or a Guardian or something, not a Talker. He's not the same class as Noel, but he is B rank. So all his attacks were telegraphed cuz mind-reading. Although, he does have that angel wings insta-cast thing that should have been useful but he doesn't use it? I don't think they gave a good explanation for that.

Heh, I just noticed that Leon and Noel are each other’s name spelled backwards.

And they're like, exact opposites! I hadn't noticed either! Huh, go figure.

Well, I almost totally gave up on this series a while back so maybe my expectations are low and I'm satisfied with this level of narrative :p
