If the police lose, you really lose

If your organisation is big enough to have a press office of more than 4 or 5 people, you will usually have an on-call rota.

Certainly, if you on an ‘agile’ tariff in the UK it can be a lot cheaper. There were times a few month ago when it was particularly windy - they were paying me to use electricity/charge my solar batteries from the grid.

I wonder how many manufacturers can currently manage that.

However, the upside is that there are no bots, dark patterns, or manipulated feeds.

There’s a huge amount of incoming spam, much of it, I suspect posted by bots. I’ve also seen account posting ‘news’ from sites that are clearly AI generated

To be honest, it feels much more likely to see posts on the Fediverse with many upvotes, few or no comments

It can work where there is real competition. For natural monopolies, not so much.

Usually it happens because the state wants to sell off family silver to make some short term cash :(

Yeh. I’m pretty comfortable with this broad mix.

Could you give som examples of where it’s desirable ?

[–] HeartyBeast@kbin.social 2 points 4 months ago

Nice tip. Thank you. I was similarly confused

Absolutely. Unless they’re actually evil. Which I’m sure they aren’t. But they could be.

Apple released the latest iOS update to the general public on Monday.

Residents of 12 states are eligible to participate if they meet certain criteria. But the agency’s plans have already met resistance from tax preparation companies.

My TM drive has just failed and I'm looking for an alternative. There have been so many mergers and rebranding among drive manufacturers over the last few years and noise about how previously good brands have been taken over and now sell junk, I'm trying ti get a steer on which ones are still decent.

Looking for 4TB - to be honest, happy woth spinning rust as it is only for backup the speed of an SSD not really needed.

For many years, I've used the excellent https://airvideo.app - it has a free little server component that runs on a Mac and a paid for iOS app that lets you watch on the device or stream to Chromecast or Apple TV.

I wanted to give my kids access to my ripped movie collection, but the app seems to have gone missing from the (UK) Appstore - and the developers aren't answering e-mail.

So. Here's what I'd like.

Something that will show me the contents of my folder of video files on my Mac and let me stream to my TV.

I've had a look at

  • Plex Hugely overly complex - tries to be an entire media manager for everything in the world

  • VLC Streamer By HobbyistSoftware. Kinda OK, but seems to take up about 300% of my M1 iMac CPU and is a bit clunky.

Any other recommendations?

Apple claims it gives a game highest priority CPU and GPU access, and reduces Bluetooth input and audio latencies too. Does it, though?

For the last 39 years, PostScript has been at the heart of the Mac, bringing desktop publishing, fonts, and the LaserWriter and other printers. It has been removed from Sonoma.

The macOS 14 Sonoma betas and release candidate contain a bug that causes the firewall to not filter traffic correctly. As a result, our app does not work.
