The mosque was built over the Jewish temple. Both groups have a historical claim to the site.... and neither can be trusted.
Interesting you should say that. I've visited there and it's a remarkable place. At the time I was reading a Tom Clancy novel and he had the same thought for all of Jerusalem. To make peace, he wrote, it should be protected by the Swiss Guard from the Vatican
So the Christians should take control?
I'm sure there's no bad blood in the area from the last times Christians tried to take Jerusalem.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre's keys have been in the hands of a Muslim family for centuries to prevent Christians from different denominations from murdering each other, so there's already a precedent for it.

Was looking for a Roman Catholic Church joke but missed the mark I think
This was actually the original plan in the first UN Partition Plan, that Jerusalem would become an international city administered by the UN. The Jews that would go on to form Israel accepted, while Palestinians rejected it, war broke out, and here we are.
Israel's far right is out of control and using the Gaza war for cover to recruit and radicalize. If Israel doesn't figure out how to shut them down it won't matter if they win the war. The country will be doomed.
I lived in Israel for 11 years. The government has been slowly but surely progressing the goals of the religious right. To keep it simple they believe the Messiah will come and march on Jerusalem to retake the temple mount and erect the Jewish temple where it once stood. Some modern interpretations I heard in yeshivah simply talk about taking back temple mount and demolishing the Muslim temple to erect the Jewish Temple.
There are a lot very rich and influential Jews who have been using their money and influence to further the ultimate goal of rebuilding the temple. Check out the Jewish National Fund.
