My wife comes from the west. I am from the East. We live in Nova Scotia now but we spent most of our lives in the west. We made some money in the oil and gas industry though it was in environmental reclamation not extraction. Lots of her family people are in extraction.

Some of her family are showing their true colors right now, loudly and proudly on Facebook and she is reading it all. People that tell her they love her are saying how we are all just in it for the transfer payments. It's all for the gravy train to keep rolling. She's watching her family disintegrate in real time on Facebook and tell her that she's a piece of shit as are her friends and relatives from my family, for voting against fascism. Not one of them has considered that they are speaking about her.

We're as fucked as our neighbors to the south.

Facebook

This is our existential threat.

[–] walktheplank@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Can't disagree with you there. That shit can fuck right off and should be torn to a million pieces never to exist again. I'm not an authoritarian however and people are free to do as they choose. They choose badly a lot. Even those I love the most.

I got banned from Facebook for fighting literal terrorists. Who used the service to attack literal at risk children. If anything. mark Zuckerberg should be tried for crimes against humanity and he and his wife hung like the traitors to man kind they are.

Propaganda is a hell of a drug. I've read about similar experiences from Ukrainians with family in Russia.

[–] DarkWinterNights@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

We really should be turning an eye towards American owned media in Canada, especially since it's almost entirely owned by hard Republican interests (and that would be bad if I had said Democrat as well).

It's insane we can almost all collectively identify Trump as a threat and an enemy, but his disinformation arm isn't.

They keep telling people to "move back to their own country" so why don't these assholes just move to Florida. Heck, we can probably even crowd source some funding to pay for their damn tickets.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 week ago

It would probably be good for them to see how much better Canada has it than the US right now. Our billionaires are living large, but that's about it.

[–] alquicksilver@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (2 children)

As someone from the US, I propose a swap program. One pro-Trump admin Canadian for an anti-Trump admin person from the US.

[–] Evkob@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

As someone from Canada, I'd be so down for this. What a great deal for us.

[–] Sciaphobia@lemm.ee 4 points 1 week ago

Pick me pick me! I even have a reasonably sized vehicle instead of one of the child crunching lane hoggers, and I'm both literate and potty trained (unlike Trump).

Dude can we rescue the ones from red states first?

[–] dom@lemmy.ca 39 points 1 week ago

So we were right. The cons and PP by association wanted to concede to trump.

Remember the bots are also trying to sway public opinion as well. The more people hear the same story it creates this false consensus.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Oh of course, that's the point

[–] Oderus@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Dude in my gym just brought it up. Says we can sign a petition and if we get 10% of the population to sign it, the government will make a referendum and we can all vote on it. He doesn't think Alberta would have to pay back anything like highways, airports, banks and our share of the Canadian debt. Also thinks we can use the USD instead of the CAD which I find funny.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Aahh, to be an ignorant idiot, must be so peaceful

I had a kid at a gym tell me that all i needed to do to get lean was eat more pepper and spicy food.

On an entirely related matter, I exercise at home now.

Why did countries stop hanging traitors? I'm pretty sure handing your sovereignty to a foreign nation classifies.

[–] rekabis@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 week ago

We should be carefully taking down names. Not to do anything now, but to hold them to account if another violent insurrection occurs.

Because even if Trump invades, these traitors will likely be hunting down the rest of us, and likely exterminating us as well. We need to be able to identify the traitors.

Remember this for the rest of your lives, the Russians are running AT LEAST thousands of bots that can be on virtually every site known to man, everything they say will push the Russian propaganda. Now, with that horrible knowledge... Add to it that that is just Russia and that China, North Korea and Israel to only name a few are all known to be doing the same. The Internet is a VERY different landscape than it was less than a decade ago.

Please don't believe the whole world is suddenly conservative Nazis. It's what they want us to believe so we feel hopeless and give up or give in.

I've thought since Alberta separatism was first mentioned in the oval office that the idea would be to make Alberta be to Canada what Crimea is to Ukraine. The groundwork had been laid and the danger from the US is real. Thankfully, I believe Carney understands how real the US threats are.

How much of this do we see in Alberta this year?

  • Pro-US & Pro-secession information campaigns
  • Pro-secession protests & rallies
  • US, MAGA, & secessionist flags & slogans
  • Violence between pro-🇺🇸 & pro-🇨🇦 groups
  • Support from US-based groups
  • Staged referendum
  • Little green men
[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

These separatist fools think they get to take the land with them.

[–] Isaac@waterloolemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

It’d be nice to see the small part of land they’d take with them when the First Nations get theirs first. I’m sure none of the oil and gas is on land that would secede. I saw years ago when Quebec wanted to separate that all the hydro electric would be remaining in Canada and given to First Nations, prob the same for AB.

Can’t even figure out seceding right, maybe they need their own country as a time out to think how dumb they are

The stupidest thing Is making Canada one state. You guys should become states 51 to 151 and then take control of the USA government.

[–] ibelieveinthehousehippo@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Or how about you guys fix your own shit and leave us the fuck alone

[–] al_Kaholic@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

Nah can't trust you guys last time you burnt down the white house.

[–] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No, that shit happened and might again who knows.

Canada wouldn't become a state, and would have no representation if they were annexed. People are delusional if they think they would get full statehood and all the rights that entails.

[–] DarkWinterNights@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

It would be regressive democratically; our MP system is far from perfect, but the electoral college is much, much worse.

Set aside all the things Albertans regularly enjoy and take for granted, and that there is absolutely no way back under the American Constitution, our taxes here would either skyrocket or massively erode our quality of life overnight.

A surface level awareness of things is telling of why it's very bad, but even that's asking a lot these days of the regular fellow who's exposure to politics is limited to what their favorite pundit says.

[–] al_Kaholic@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 week ago

I hope nothing but the best for you northern bros, what I see is just the USA like 10 to 25 years ago. 🤞 I hope I'm wrong.

I’m sorry that our cancer has spread to you guys.

[–] King_Bob_IV@startrek.website 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ha! As a life long Albertan. We have had this cancer for a very very long time. Up until the NDP won an election a few cycles back the way it tended to work was the only way to unseat a conservative government was with an even more conservative government.

[–] zipzoopaboop@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 week ago

Lots of Vancouver folk headed toward Calgary

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Is there a conservative versus liberal heat map of Canada? I’d like to see if there’s connectivity with the US version at the borders.

[–] alsimoneau@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Just look at the election results.

But no, it's urban vs rural, as expected.

You wouldn't see this on Friendica!

[–] Isaac@waterloolemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

While I’m sure it’s true of most of the fediverse, hopefully at some point echo chambers can be broken. Maybe the chuds who scream like children at anything they don’t recognize as their ilk doesn’t need to be assaulted with lunacy.

So basically I hope all will leave Meta and the social media platforms of yore, even if they’re mouth breathing chuds. Maybe getting into a dose of friendliness will be their antidote to the big crazy
