a new low for Australia.
Not even close.
I'd be interested to hear how many of those strips searches of children have actually yielded anything. If that number is zero, or close to zero, then what's the justification for it to continue?
The NSW Police commissioner has backed his officers' use of strip searches, saying there should be "a little bit of fear" of law enforcement.
Then they wonder why people hate law enforcement lmao
Jesus Christ
According to the article, 25% lead to convictions. I don't know if there's an appropriate quantity of strip searches greater than zero, but if it's going to happen, this actually seems like a pretty good result.
I guess the questions to ask here are: could these arrests be made without a strip search (e.g. would a frisk have been sufficient)? If not, could the strip searches be done by an adult of the same gender and also in the presence of their parent or guardian?
There's definitely a lot that is bad about this, but if 25% of strip searches result in conviction, there's clearly another problem here that needs to be addressed.
Unless I misunderstand it, they're saying 25% of all strip searches lead to convictions, but I'm curious what percentage of the strip searches conducted on children specifically do. I can't imagine it's 25%.
And your point is a good one - how many of those required the strip search?
(E: didn't mean to derail, just adding info, this story is beyond horrific and shouldn't be happening anywhere, I'm sorry folks over there are also having to deal with this shit. ACAB)
Following in the dirty footsteps of the dysfunctional motherland I see..
Data collected by the children’s commissioner found there were at least 2,847 recorded strip-searches of children (age 8-17) pre-arrest across England and Wales between 2018 and 2022 under stop and search powers.....
The report released says 38% of children strip-searched were black. Black children make up 5.9% of the population, meaning they were six times over-represented. White children accounted for 42% of searches and make up 74% of the population.
The data was analysed for the Guardian by Dr Krisztián Pósch, a lecturer in crime science at University College London. It shows a black child in England and Wales was 11 times more likely to be strip-searched than their white counterparts....
One in a hundred strip-searches of children took place in public view, the report says, and 6% were conducted with an officer present of a different gender to the child being searched. Appropriate adults were not present in 52% of cases...
Less than a third of the cases (31%) led to arrest.
