He was a great hockey player. That doesn't make him a great human being or a great Canadian.

Just like with doctors, engineers, architects....hockey players don't need to be particularly smart, nor good people, to be good at what they do.

Senility and specialty.

People get old and their brains break - it happens to us all.

People who are good at a thing are considered to be good - which they aren't necessarily. Someone who is good at hockey or while being managed by a PR team isn't necessarily a good chef or a good woodworker... this might sound obvious in those cases but people constantly make this mistake when it comes to politics.

He is a very good example why celebrities shouldn't be worshipped. Yes they are often very good, world class, at some thing. But only that one thing. They may be shit at everything else, including being a decent human being. Enjoy what talent they share - a great goal scorer is a great goal scorer - but don't ascribe more to them than that. They can't topple off a pedestal if you don't put them up there to begin with.

Whoops, meant this to be a reply to the CTE comment.

This seems to sum it up; from one of the images in the article:

Wayne Gretzky has faced criticism recently for his ties to Donald Trump. The NHL great has publicly supported the U.S. president and visited him several times in recent months at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy aka brain injuries aka multiple concussions

They’re implying that it’s the result of head trauma suffered during his playing career but it could just be he’s a shit person.

Isn’t he from Alberta, which is quite conservative?

[–] Foregone_Premise@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

He's from my home town Brantford, Ontario. Not a particularly conservative place.

I don’t know, I’m only Canadian lite (Minnesotan) and was just answering the question. If I remember correctly he was a pretty big supporter of George Bush in the 00s so I’d assume he’s always a been pretty conservative and that’s likely only gone further right with age and more wealth.

His family is very much Ukrainian too. Sad indeed.
