I made a gift link article for a friend to prove NY Times columnist Maureen Dowd ate an entire chocolate bar of chocolates she got where the instructions clearly to eat one chomp or whatever small pieces of chocolate are called.

I thought I’d share it here since The NY Times gives 30 days to gift links. Please enjoy Maureen Dowd’s story of eating a whole chocolate bar: https://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/04/opinion/dowd-dont-harsh-our-mellow-dude.html?unlocked_article_code=1.304.f3-4.53knmon_lsFq

Dowd is right. There should be some kind of standard so you understand dosage. When I try an edible, I eat a tiny amount and wait an hour. This isn't because I'm smart, it's because I've had bad experiences with potent stuff.

I know how many beers or shots I can get away with. With edibles, it's a gamble every time.

How many kids have given themselves alcohol poisoning their first few times drinking because they didn't understand the proper dosage? Thats a much more serious and significant problem, but nobodys suggesting alcohol should only be available in individual serving airline bottles.

South Carolina used to do that. Like even at fancy restaurants, they would open an airplane bottle to make your cocktail.

She’s either an idiot or did this intentionally, and I don’t think she’s an idiot. Plus, all the edibles I’ve bought have had dosage recommendations on the packaging (although, to be fair, I’ve only bought edibles in recent years. I don’t know what the labeling was like in 2014).

Further, any half-decent dispensary will be staffed by people eager to help and give newbies some valuable advice. I suspect that Dowd didn’t even try to ask for help, and may even have posed as an experienced user.

"I drank an entire fifth of vodka because I am a fucking idiot."

Copaganda.

Dare me to drive?

Right but I can walk into a liquor store and buy enough booze to kill Ernest Hemingway and Hunter S. Thompson but there should be restrictions on edibles because some people can’t handle them?

I remember this article. Can’t believe it’s over 10 years ago

A lot has gone backwards since then but at least cannabis is legal in most places (even if only medicinally). I have a prescription and being able to know the strain and dose is actually really important.

I just have random anxiety attacks and a small-to-medium dose of Granddaddy Purp works better than any traditional medicine I’ve tried. Benzos just make me sleep. I can at least function with the right dose and strain and I can be certain about it buying from a dispensary. And my case is minor. It’s way more important for people with stomach cancer or whatever who have no appetite. The right dose and strain makes them hungry and happy. I don’t think there’s an equivalent pharmaceutical. Every state/country should make medicinal marijuana legal. Otherwise, people buy it off a dealer and can’t measure the dose or know the strain.

38/50 states have at least medical accessibility. It’s amazing both how widespread it is, and also how areas without legal weed still pretend it’s some societal ill that’s going to destroy us, like there’s not ample evidence in the next state disproving the fear mongers

[–] ShittyBeatlesFCPres@lemmy.world 1 points 27 minutes ago

I might be the poster child for medicinal use. I never really enjoyed getting high and I’ve gone to many Dead and Company and Widespread shows. So, I’m not an amateur or in favor of restricting drugs but I normally just say “No thanks.” when I’m the rotation. Most strains make me itchy or tired and antisocial. Everyone’s brain chemistry is different. For me, I either had fun or (more often) just felt miserable.

When I developed an anxiety disorder, I tried everything else. And some pharmaceutical pills do work but it takes like 30 minutes for a pill to work. But I found a strain and dose that works in 2 or 3 minutes. I’m not saying everyone will have the same experience but it should be legal everywhere. People who don’t even smoke recreationally testify that it’s got fewer negative side effects and helps. If it were a novel drug, it’d easily get FDA clearance.
