8GB RAM is more than enough for watching movies.

Load the whole movie into RAM and go to town.

The Nvidia Shield TV, which is amply powerful for most media purposes, has only 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, though is expandable via microSD.

The "Pro" version bumps that to a whopping 3GB of RAM and 16GB of storage... with no microSD card slot.

You can expand it with a usb hard drive as large as you like though.

And half of it is used by Chinese spyware.

RethinkDNS has a lockdown mode where it blocks everything you don't explicitly unblock. Doesn't help with memory usage but might be useful to not be part of a botnet or ten.

If that’s a dns server, that will help with a lot, but not against everything. Some malware has hardcoded IPs to phone home, so they don’t need to look up any ips.

It includes a full firewall that can block everything (that an Android VPN can block).

You weren't planning to store movies on the box, were you? Do yourself a favor and set up jellyfin on your network
