There he goes again, attacking allies more than he attacks China.

[–] MapleEngineer@lemmy.world 37 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

If you are a non-Trump voter in a red state, especially if you work for the flagship company or industry in that state, I would like to apologize on behalf of all Canadians for what our government is about to do. We don't want to do it but it is the only way to deal with a bully.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 19 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I hear ya. Probably going to lose my job because of this, and it isn't your fault.

[–] ipkpjersi@lemmy.ml 7 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

I think both countries are going to have a lot of job losses because of this. It's never the idiot leaders who suffer, it's everyone else.

I'm not sure how well I'm going to be sleeping anymore. Oh well.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

I haven't slept well in months. I'm confident in my ability to make it to Canada when (not if) I need to. But at this point they're forcing our hand. When there's no hope, there's nothing left to lose.

[–] _cryptagion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 15 hours ago

Gotta go easy on the hammer and sickle for helping him get elected.

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 49 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Interesting that he’s going easier on China than us or Mexico. Sorry, I meant obvious.

[–] Scolding7300@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

Why is it obvious? I still don't understand why

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 7 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Because this is even more true now than it was in 2017. And if you don't wish to read it all, just go down to the 'paper trail' section.

[–] Scolding7300@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

Thanks for the article

[–] lemmydividebyzero@reddthat.com 8 points 15 hours ago

Trump wants lower interest rates, but does everything to raise inflation and therefore keep them up.

[–] tabarnaski@sh.itjust.works 38 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

With this and DOGE it sure seems the US is slowly destroying itself from the inside, all to the benefit of Russia, China and a few rich guys

[–] Dogiedog64@lemmy.world 25 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Pfffft, "slowly"??? They pushed the pedal to the floor and launched it off the cliff! And we're duct-taped to the back seat...

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

This is the really real world!

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 8 points 16 hours ago

News can't even report on Elmo's bros taking over our government payment system and HR system because Trump just made everything 25% more expensive

[–] Exeous@lemmy.world 32 points 22 hours ago (3 children)
[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 34 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

Everything except energy apparently?

[–] NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 46 points 21 hours ago (3 children)

Go figure, he wants Americans to continue driving gas guzzlers and not see the price of gas go up in the states.

Americans also unaware that this means they will be paying more for imported goods.

[–] TipRing@lemmy.world 13 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Americans will be paying more for everything. Domestic suppliers have free reign to raise prices to match.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago

Yup, that's the point of tariffs. Nationalism. It's just a very stupid stance when our economy has been propped up by bullshit for decades. I can't help but think of the little British girl from the resident evil movie. "You are all going to die down here" thanks little girl, I know, didn't need to hear you say it.

[–] Hobbes_Dent@lemmy.world 36 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I fully support Canada embargoing oil. Won’t happen because Alberta is a Trumpy little traitor and will make a tantrum.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 12 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Our flatlanders are allied with the cruel conservative Americans. They're not gonna cut off oil because it would hurt their friend; and also they're so fat on that teat they have no plan-b.

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 5 points 19 hours ago

I'd be supportive of Canada as a whole doing the right thing. Those pipelines need to be severed.

[–] jumperalex@lemmy.world 18 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Many of us are well aware it'll raise the cost of goods, and not just imports. Any domestic competitors that don't raise priced by say, 20% and 7%, is leaving money on the table and will get sued by their share holders.

I'm not saying I like that fact, but it just is.

[–] bassomitron@lemmy.world 10 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

How many consumer goods are even made in the US besides food? I know we do make some things, but 90% of the stuff at Walmart is imported crap.

I use Walmart as the example since that's where most of the GOP voter base lives and breathes.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

A handful of cars and large equipment? Realistically the only reason we've been a superpower this long is because of the deal with Saudi to install the Petro dollar. Republicunts don't understand how fragile this shit is.

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah good luck with that though. We're going to retaliate with our own energy tarrifs

[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Good, I hope the economy burns so these moron republicans wake up a little.

[–] Mereo@lemmy.ca 7 points 21 hours ago (1 children)
[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago

Right, I should have been clearer what energy means. Crude oil.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 10 points 19 hours ago

Lumber from Canada is a big one.

[–] Chekhovs_Gun@lemmy.world 8 points 21 hours ago (1 children)
[–] metaStatic@kbin.earth 3 points 21 hours ago

oooh, that's good

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 17 points 20 hours ago

So the US is only slightly stepping on China for appearances? weirdChamp

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 17 points 20 hours ago

So we raise all prices. Even energy. 40%

"Okay Mr smarty-pants. Do you wanna go for 50? Don't try me."

To tank the entire continent so American tech billionaires can bring back feudalism

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 8 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, if you force enough car companies to come close to bankruptcy, they'll have to sell to Tesla before it folds. If left to true capitalism, musk would likely be broke before he dies. This is just an example, and the same model used for every major industry. If Tesla was valued as a regular company instead of a speculation stock, it would be in the dirt already.

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 6 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I'm kind of hoping we (Canada) just ban Tesla and Elon companies in this stupid trade war, or preferably, fight dirty and disregard Tesla trademarks and make out own Teslas (while also banning the company). Elon's wealth is tied to Tesla stock so if we can make even a bit of a dent in that, it'll be a good day (and hilarious)

[–] skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 hours ago

Unfortunately, you literally don't want Tesla's trademarks. Their cars are demonstrably worse than any other EV option including the super cheap Chinese ones. They have zero value outside of having Musk's name attached.

[–] blattrules@lemmy.world 10 points 17 hours ago

Because he learned a word and built his entire policy around it.

[–] BombOmOm@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago

To encourage more manufacturing in the US. Such will not be exposed to the tariffs.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Putin, why else. He wants a weakened US.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 1 points 15 hours ago

So does China. All of our economic rivals.
