Trump calls the US-Canada border an "artificially drawn line", in what seems like one of the most dumbfounding statements the "build the wall" president could possibly utter.

But which probably isn't, because it's Trump.

Canada's mistake is responding to trump.
They should respond to America.
It's generally the media's mistake in their reporting.

If trump says something, treat that as America saying something.

Stop giving Americans/America leeway on this as if trump is some passing fad. That works the first time.
But after 2016 election, then 2020, and re-electing trump... That's America speaking.

Trump wants Canada, Panama Canal, Greenland and Gulf of Mexico?
No. America wants Canada, Panama Canal, Greenland and Gulf of Mexico.

The general public is used to trump headlines being a joke. They've had 4 years of buffoonery & disappointment, and 4 years of court buffoonery & disappointing headlines. The next 4 years of trump explicitly stating what America is going to do is going according to the last 8 years of republican R&D is going to be dismissed before its too late.

Saying "America states..." and "America intends to..." might wake some Americans up to what is actually happening

Indeed, the Canadian response has been deeply unserious.

This is the kind of shit where you summon the ambassador to explain himself.

Canada needs to ramp up its trade with other countries and become less dependent on the USA.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's exactly what's going to happen and in fact countries are already distancing themselves.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 1 points 11 hours ago

Did that happen the last time around? We were sitting here talking more trade with EU and PRC. Did that materialize? I'm skeptical but I honestly haven't seen the numbers.

[–] TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The current Lib government in Canada made some attempts, but the incoming Con government is going to double down on trade with the US when they get in. Poilivre is a wannabee strongman who wants abortion gone up here, and he'll just do whatever the US says, much as Harper did.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

I think you'll find them saying one thing and making a give deal of it only to extend trade deals to whoever they can.

[–] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

in my heart I know the intent of the morons speaking about it serious, while the feasability of it actually being attempted, is not.
(Drop the world into chaos with a few nuclear blasts and escalation of state wars, that might change and the Americans will probably try it)

that being said, Canadians are open to using violence to protect their sovereingty. We've been killing fascists and imperialists since 1914, we are quite good at it. We thought we were going to be killing Russian fascists next, but have no qualms about doing it to American Fascists if forced to.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

The problem is Canada can't protect it's soverentiy. I mean I know we would have no chance against America. But our military is a joke and it should be dismantled and built up from the ground. I mean procurement is a joke troop housing is a joke and recruitment is a joke. Calling people years after applying.

[–] KillerTofu@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And you churn out the best snipers.

[–] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Much like with Russia and Putin, the fascist extremism in america isn't going to die with one man.

[–] KillerTofu@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

I wasn’t implying anything of the sort.

[–] ZC3rr0r@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

The most surprising thing in this whole saga is that Gretzky is apparently fine with Canada being a US state? Like what?

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

So just normalize the claiming of countries? Is that what's happening?

How convenient for the countries doing it first, Mr. Putin.

[–] Rakenclaw@fedia.io 8 points 1 day ago

Run along and get McDonald's to change your diapers you fat and pathetic orange fuck.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

God, just fucking leave him alone. Ignore the bluster, he's just trying to get a rise out of you. Listen, Canada, just like, be cool for four years. He's going to talk a lot of shit, and everybody knows he's full of shit. Yes, he's going to try something stupid, and when that happens, everybody knows he's going to get bitch-slapped. But right now, he's just seeking attention. He's not even sworn in. But every time you respond, it restarts the news cycle, and he knows he can keep it going with another stupid ass quote. Walk away, and let him fart into his own mouth for a while.

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 38 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You know what happened when I ignored the bully in school? I got bullied more.

You know what happened when I popped him in the mouth? He stopped.

The more he gets told to fuck off, by more people, the less likely this becomes normalized.

You don't let bullies run their mouth.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Ok, pop him in the mouth. Metaphorically, or actually. Please. I'd pay money to see it.

The problem is that he isn't the bully. He's the annoying kid who hangs around the bully acting tough and starting shit. He runs his mouth, gets attention, and when the fighting starts he hides behind a dumpster until it's over. There's no winning an argument with Trump, because he goal is to lure you into an argument.

Nothing would be more satisfying than to see him get his comeuppance, but I don't believe that's going to happen anymore. I had hopes, and we've had ample opportunities, but there are too many shitty Americans who are willing to let him get away with his bullshit.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Someone popped him in the ear. It didn't help.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He smacked his ear on a secret service guy's leg. The bullet didn't get that close.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 2 points 1 day ago

It was in a frame of video. If you believe in photographic evidenceπŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah, you just described a bully that happens to be a coward like all bullies.

You aren't making any case against that.

And he should have faced consequences already, but the morons down south seem to like bullies.

Apathy and deflection of responsibility is acceptance.

[–] Albbi@lemmy.ca -5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This isn't the same though. Trump called Trudeau a Governor by accident and got a pretty big response out of that. All of a sudden these ideas of making Canada a state popped into his head and he keeps posting it because it gets attention. If we had've just ignored him he wouldn't get traction.

We pretty much need a law in Canada that says stop publishing Trump stories.

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago

I don't think it was an accident, and the fact he wasn't immediately shut down told him he could keep doing it.

We don't need a censorship law about trump. He's the president elect of our neighbour, who happens to be a superpower.

Stop trying to ignore the bastard.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

My concern would be that there are evidently so many gullible right-wing types around, I could see Trump winning over a good portion of them in both the USA and Canada, and Canada being undermined from within with the help of the usual propagandists (and perhaps Poilievre's Conservative government).

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

That's a fair concern, but address those assholes directly. You cannot fight the firehose of bullshit from Trump.

While I hate this for america I can't wait for the MC treaty and theme song. treaty time!
