Are they just avoiding saying Luigi Mangione's name now? I know the media wanted to stop posting images of him as much but it seems weird to just say "Man accused..." when everyone knows who it is

[–] teawrecks@sopuli.xyz 26 points 1 day ago

Man, they sure got on the ball and solved that case quickly. Can't wait to see how they stick it to those healthcare companies literally profiting off the murder of millions!

[–] bender223@lemmy.today 20 points 1 day ago

He should claim self defense cuz the CEO attacked him first by denying him life saving healthcare.

[–] tiefling@lemmy.blahaj.zone 246 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Kyle Rittenhouse is free and enriching himself from his crime...

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 112 points 2 days ago (14 children)

The victim doesn't matter unless they are worth millions of dollars or stand to help others win or loss millions.

When you think about it .... the system isn't protecting people, whether they are rich or not ... the system is just thinking about protecting wealth and capital.

I dunno, he may be free—but he’s not doing too much enrichment. No one wants anything to do with him because he’s an idiot, and not the useful kind.

The owners think this would send a message.

I'm not sure they realize that message would be Martyr.

[–] phoneymouse@lemmy.world 98 points 2 days ago (1 children)

He looks kinda badass with so many cops and the freaking mayor behind him like they’re his entourage, or like he so dangerous that they need 30 men to control him.

I’d say this “perp walk” backfired.

[–] LordCrom@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's like if the cops captured the King Pin. Does it take 50 cops to escort 1 prisoner

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

I’ve seen The Fugitive AND US Marshalls. They need at least 50 cops!

[–] wagesj45@fedia.io 36 points 2 days ago

But all the chiding scolds on TV assured me that violence is never the answer. 🤔

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 143 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I couldn’t be bothered to give a fuck about this man’s crime when the thing he killed was a mass murderer.

[–] SpicyLizards@reddthat.com 37 points 2 days ago (1 children)

More justice than the justice system can allow

[–] ovalofsand@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It's funny that you talk about Mass murderers because when the alt right talks about Mass murderers that align with their skin colors it's usually apologetic

[–] Bronzebeard@lemm.ee 8 points 2 days ago

Left v right is a distraction from the actual class war being wages on us by the wealthy elite

[–] Frozengyro@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They might have the same skin color, but to them they are the poors, aka inhuman.

[–] ovalofsand@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

I must admit I'm in my cups right now, but I feel like To the maga proletariat, I don't even think they go as deep as that. To them it's more like in group out group thinking, which means you don't look like me or talk like me so fuck you

[–] TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world 83 points 2 days ago (4 children)

They want to send a message: violence against those in the oligarchic hierarchy will not be tolerated.

[–] mjhelto@lemm.ee 58 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They ain't seen nothing yet if they make this dude a martyr. I'm not a violent person, but there's a pent up frustration inside a lot of us just itching for a reason to come out and redistribute some wealth. Stock of United Healthcare still in the shitter? That was rich people losing billions.

That's the only thing these parasites care about: their life and their money. We have been shown that any of us have the power to take away both in a single act of targeted violence. Once we collectively realize that, shit will go down.

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 28 points 2 days ago

Martyr? You mean

SAINT LUIGI OF BALTIMORE!

[–] ramsorge@discuss.online 29 points 2 days ago

Not guilty on all charges, your honor.

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 days ago

Welp, if we have nothing to lose...

The federal complaint filed Thursday charges Mangione with two counts of stalking and one count each of murder through use of a firearm and a firearms offense. Murder by firearm carries the possibility of the death penalty, though federal prosecutors will determine whether to pursue that path in coming months.

In a state court indictment announced earlier this week, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office charged Mangione with murder as an act of terrorism, which carries a possible sentence of life in prison without parole. New York does not have the death penalty.

Mangione’s lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, said it’s a “highly unusual situation” for a defendant face simultaneous state and federal cases.

“Frankly I’ve never seen anything like what is happening here,” said Friedman Agnifilo, a former top deputy in the Manhattan district attorney’s office.

Unfortunately it's becoming more common, and it is legal

Is this that "lawfare" I hear so much about?

[–] Voytrekk@lemmy.world 51 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I understand the overlords have requested this guy get every charge and penalty that he can, but they have to understand that the general population sympathizes with him on some level.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 46 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The overlords don't have to request shit, Eric Adams already gave them the keys.

This is the Forbes profile entry for the NYPD commisoner's dad, she's never worked in law enforcement before btw

https://www.forbes.com/profile/james-tisch/

You may notice this part:

James is CEO of Loews. His brother Andrew and cousin Jonathan are co-chairmen.

Loews is active in insurance, drilling rigs, natural gas pipelines and hotels.

The NYPD commissioner is the daughter of a billionaire CEO that's active in the insurance industry...

Absolutely no one had to request she act like this

[–] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Loews, the hardware, home improvement and highly flammable lumber stores?

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

Nah, that's Lowes.

And off the top of my head, a pretty decent corpo all things considered.

Loews is however coincidentally headquartered in NYC

You don't need a formal conspiracy

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 36 points 2 days ago (2 children)

They won't give him the death penalty. They would have fucking riots on their hands.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 36 points 2 days ago (8 children)

Bruh...

They want riots. Didn't you pay attention to BLM?

They're absolutely desperate for some shit to pop off so they can call people against the American healthcare industry a violent mob.

They want anything other than a repeat

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 26 points 2 days ago (2 children)

There won't be any riots. The reason this guy acted at all is because the people are too cowed. There are thousands of people in the same position as him, but none of them are taking any action. Tens of thousands more are in a similar position, but are they already in the streets? No.

This guy is a celebrity because he's doing what everyone wishes they could do, but are afraid to do themselves. The quick arrest and trial are to remind people of what will happen to them, too, if they step out of line.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

I think you're right, but I don't want you to be.

[–] TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I feel like the statistical chances this is the only guy, even just in the USA itself with a 300 million plus population, capable and willing to do this would be insane. This was domino one, we're just waiting on the who/what domino two is.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

Hopefully you're right.

I think a big part of the problem with that coming to be so is that there is probably a majority of people who understand that our health care system is screwed and screws people over, but so many of them don't have any idea or understanding of why. And they're not aware of the class war.

[–] badbytes@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

LA viva revolution

[–] ninjabard@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago

Gonna be real funny when it turns out they arrested the wrong guy.

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

Political Violence:

Non-action on the part of a government can also be characterized as a form of political violence, such as refusing to alleviate famine or otherwise denying resources to politically identifiable groups within their territory.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think that was a foregone conclusion. I also think he was probably fully aware of that before he shot the gun.
