I'm looking for a way to browse YT or find creators I might like.

In the long run I'd like to use YT like my podcasts. Thst is, play the new content daily/weekly form people I follow rather than mindlessly scrolling the algorithm.

With most podcast apps I can just see categories and go through the top creators in each category. Along with seeing how often content is posted. This way I can also check out other random categories and find content outside what is normally like.

Searching YT just gets all the clickbate and my algorithm is pretty rubbish. Im using Tubular and SmartTube, but perhaps there is a website or other way to find creators?

Depending on what kind of content you’re into, you could try browsing through nebula‘s offerings. They’re sorted by categories and most of it is high-quality content.

You cannot watch the videos there without a subscription but almost all of the creators have YouTube channels too.

I mean, how many channels do you need?

In general, I don't think I found most of the YouTube channels that have creators that I watch on YouTube. It tended to be on Reddit, where in the course of a conversation, people with familiarity in an area recommended relevant channels. I wasn't actively looking for them.

EDIT: What you might try doing, if you don't want to use Reddit for this, is going to a community on the Threadiverse that's relevant to whatever interest that you're looling for, and asking folks there to recommend YouTube channels relevant to the subject. Might also try hitting Google or similar to search for past references to YouTube channels on a community or subreddit. For Reddit, site:reddit.com/r/subredditname.

Kagi has a "Fediverse communities" search that I use; I don't know if anyone has yet created a dedicated search engine, but I imagine that it's good odds that someone will sooner or later.
