In the Balkans and Turkey you don't own a cat. They just live in your neighborhood.

I was wondering why the value was so low when I've heard Turkiye lovessss their cats. (Kinda makes me want to move there lol)

I've seen Kedi - like... cats must be considered a public good for numbers so low.

[–] gregor@gregtech.eu 4 points 10 months ago

The cats own you!

Looks like the cats are nearing majority rule in Romania, I wonder how much longer until they start pushing through cat leaning legislation?

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 14 points 10 months ago

Once it passes the threshold, anyone adopting a cat will be entitled to fully paid caternity leave.

Ownership might not be the best word ...

Perhaps how many households are inhabited by cats?

Or just cats per capita?

[–] PixTupy@lemmy.ml 16 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Cats per capita would be a very different map in the east, like Greece and Turkey. They have a lot of street cats that are taken care of by the neighborhood.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Yeah there's no cats in Turkish households because they're all chilling in the streets of Istanbul

Yeah, Turkiye was def a surprise (bcs I don't know anything besides two cities) - it also made me think that some people that have regularly or even regular cats in or around their house might not consider themselves as cat "owners" or owned by cats or a cat household. So that "free to leave" cats arent considered in this statistics.

[–] Comment105@lemm.ee 2 points 10 months ago

Being a Turkish cat and sticking to one household is like being a New Yorker and sticking to one pizzeria.

Not entirely uncommon, but still a stupid fucking decision only a moron would make.

Well, that's where Switzerland is, but I have no idea why it's labeled CHE.

[–] Thavron@lemmy.ca 12 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It comes from the Latin name for Switzerland; Confoederatio Helvetica

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

it's just weird to see the E on the end for me, i'm used to switzerland simply being CH

[–] lunarul@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

They went for the alpha-3 codes on this map instead of alpha-2. In theory they're clearer, but in Europe most people are used to the alpha-2 codes.
