I have decided to build my own Captain's chair and would love to share my process with the community and hopefully get some trek-minded people with ideas to make it the best it can be!

I ordered a pricey salon chair because it has the look I am going for... the plan is to remove the foot rest portion, and spray the metal side panels to match the silver on the arm rests.

I currently work for a sign shop so Im going to take advantage of that by cutting out portions of the metal side panels and inlaying transparent LCARs displays on acrylic panels and backlighting them with LEDs.

Anyone else with ideas on how to trek this thing out would be most appreciated! It arrives in 2 weeks so Im hoping to have it all planned out so I can get to work when it arrives :)

I don't have any suggestions but I NEED you to post pictures whenever you're done

There's an episode of Enterprise about this. The first thing you're going to want to do is get a full detail 3D scan of your entire body

No idea how you are with electronics, but it would be sweet to have a tablet with an LCARS layout built into a display for controlling your music and ~~tv~~ main viewscreen, as well as any smart home devices you might have.

Yeah thats a great idea. I think the arm rests are too narrow for a full tablet but Ill see if my old android phone will fit- would be super cool to have interactive controls that actually do things

Before you chop off the footrest, make sure that you can touch the floor. Some of these chairs are built higher than usual, so the seat is higher too 👍

Theres a keyboard that a dude scammed a bunch of people with called like the King's Assembly. Not sure how keen you are on fitting that in the arms for the full look of controls right there but that would be sweet. It never came out though, so sourcing the parts or parts like them will be difficult.

Oh yeah I found it, thats neat however it looks more TOS era i think im going to go for touchscreen buttons like everything after TNG

Ah, its probably too thin to seat an android tablet with the LCARS launcher in the arms. I tried searching for thin touch screens to no avail.

Holy moly, I have a very similar chair but in red. I just got it so I could have a robust chair at bar-height.

My problem is that removing the footrest portion leaves mounting brackets poking out at whichever point you remove it. So I'm particularly interested in your process for chewing through any metal bits around there.

I don't have trek-thematic advice, but I can tell you that little chrome armrest bit is the perfect size to rest a normal-sized trackball.

I think I can get the guys in the shop at work to grind down any metal that might remain from the foot rest so fingers crossed there are no complications

Cool. I'd love it if you post the final product when you're done.

Seems like a cool project. It always felt like a captain's chair to me.

Have you seen Adam Savage's video on building his own?

[–] Quizitor@startrek.website 1 points 11 months ago

Not yet I will check it out though. I assume just a TOS chair? All I can seem to find online is people building the big boxy TOS chair out of plywood.

New update - the sign for behind my desk (and the future captain's chair) got installed today

All setup and ready to start modifications.
