In other news, can someone recommend a good, affordable open-source stack for security cameras with local recording to a home server (remote access would be a bonus)

I know you said Open Source but the ones I tried were not fabulous. I used BlueIris for about a decade. I recently depreciated that for a Ubiquity NVR and cameras. BlueIris works well if you have an Intel CPU with iGPU to do the decoding. BlueIris can record to network attached storage and if you follow online guidelines you can ensure CPU utilization isn’t through the roof.
I'm open to closed source if I can host it locally and costs less than $200 + the cost of the cameras :P
And yes, my home server running Ubuntu does have an Intel iGPU as it's a Lenovo ThinkCentre M900
Thank you, I've been recommended Frigate recently, I'll take a look at it :)
It takes a bit to set up, but I've been running it to detect people and save clips/images for a couple years. Works pretty well. I'd recommend getting a coral tpu to offload the person detection though.
Would the USB version work fine? Seems relatively affordable for what it is.
That's the one I have.
I think BlueIris full retail copy is something like $50. You pay yearly for upgrades which is around $25. It’s gone through many major upgrades. They do have a trial you can grab to give it a shot.
Looks like the full retail copy is $135 CAD (I have two cameras), but it doesn't support Linux as far as I can tell :(
Only downside to it. Ran it in a windows VM in Unraid for about 5 years.
