Is there such a thing a EU based tankie or is it reserved for suburban white trash living in Hoboken or Williamsburg
Oh yeah, around here (Portugal) we have a Communist Party and they're pro-Russia and supported Putin even though present day Russia is actually Fascist and the Portuguese Communist Party was born in the fight against the Fascist Dictatorship that ruled the country until 1974.
Didn't go down so well and a number of them walked back on it but the official position of the party is still vague and I've heard some of them parrot Russian propaganda points once in a while.
Their political beliefs are a collection of really old slogans rather than a thinking ideology so they're basically brainless muppets and hence their long-running mindless love for Russia was easy to exploit by Putin's Regime.
Mind you, when the invasion started I also saw some of the old people in the small leftwing party I'm in instinctively side with Russia (leftwingers in Portugal during the Fascist days were heavily inspired by the Soviet Union hence the older one tend to instinctively side with Russia), but at least those I could convince away from that position (by for example pointing out the similarities with America invading Iraq and hence that being against Russia's invasion of Ukraine was the only consistent position with being against America's invasion of Iraq) - those people are in a leftwing party other than in the Communist Party exactly because they're not into authoritarianism and mindless following of Party dictums so they're actually thinking lefties rather than merely slogan parrots.
Given the current jingoist ambiance, "Russian propaganda" is probably merely being pacifist.

Oh no, these guys are really old fashioned Marxist-Leninists and at some point they even admitted to being Stalinists.
They're not the thinking kind of Lefties who might just be against war out of principle, they're just heavily indoctrinated types in a very specific prepackaged ideology that claims to be Leftwing - basically they're "Left"wing MAGAs.

My (Swedish) mother has a boner for Putin. She fully believes that the Ukraine invasion is Russia fighting against Nazis.
Sure, mental illness is a universally human thing. I can give you an example a Polish tankie (look up Rebirth of Communism / Odrodzenie komunizmu on youtube), which is wild considering how every leftist organization here hates Putin. But I guess true internationalism means you support a fascist empire openly threatening to nuke you.
Well you know how there are actual braindead people in America that support everything the government is doing? There are the same kind of dipshits in the other countries run by fascist regimes too.

take a moment to consider american history, how far would they go to fuck with communists?
it's not hard to imagine that someone could believe there's a moral binary, that they and their favorite country are on the positive site of that binary and that due to various reasons the way to handle those on the negative site of the binary has to be strict or oppressive or repressive or violent, for example because something something material conditions mean capitalists will always work against you, or something something the contradiction between our people and an autonomous region cannot be solved with peaceful and harmonious measures
or if you seek revolution then obviously that is going to get violent, and because your revolution cannot be compromised you must use the strongest force and control to keep the revolution from being hijacked from the inside and turned against itself. your revolutionary purpose hasn't been achieved yet, obviously you can't loosen things just yet. in fact who knows who's going to turn against you any day now, maybe you should be even harsher.
i’ve met a lot of communists in person, not a single one of them acts like online communists, and they all stay off those places because they’re full of shills.
maybe i’ve just been lucky, but people being incredibly, fascistly, pro-stalin, castro and mao… it just doesn’t make sense except for shills and contrarians.
western marxism does place a lot of emphasis on democratizing everything, but I just think it's not that hard to imagine that someone might have a bit of an authoritarian streak, even if they want the best for everyone. in fact wanting the best for everyone can probably justify a lot of ugly ("necessary") ideas. also with the way the west treats socialist, communist and marxist leaders it's not that difficult to fall into almost a left fascism, certainly a cult of personality. marxists are made into these highly alien beings, and maybe you like aliens. plus, marxist leaders were charismatic philosophers, and those are sometimes likeable traits.
