The reason is simple: she's a bigot. She has been successful at pushing her transphobic agenda into UK law, and she will continue to move across the spectrum because hate only knows how to hate even when they succeed.
This is exactly the reason I'm shifting from just warning people that buying her shit is immoral so outright calling them bigots for supporting bigotry. If they don't want to be bigots they can stop giving her their goddamn money.
I support and share most of your opinions. She is a huge bigot and should be accountable for her actions. My only point is that we have kids and teenagers still consuming her books and products that are completely unaware of what is happening and shouldn't be called out because of that.
While I don't disagree I think it's important to keep in mind that kids and teenagers aren't stupid - they are capable of understanding that you shouldn't allow a bad person to continue to be a bad person if you have a conversation about why what JKR is doing is bad. Most of the vocal pushback that I've experienced offline has actually come from teenagers.
The problem lies squarely with millennial parents who continue to buy books/movies/games/merch for themselves or their young children because of nostalgia. They are old enough to know better, and should be held responsible for their actions.
I disagree with this take. Buying HP stuff won't change anything. Not "it will change very little". It will actually do nothing. If the whole world decided to stop buying anything that gave her money, it wouldn't change her lifestyle at all. She already made enough money that she never has to consider it for her lifestyle. People might as well enjoy what they like and not have one more thing weighing on their mental health. Let people have their escapism.
You should encourage them to pirate any JK Rowling-associated content, then, if these people cannot be assed to read different books by different authors. Though obviously you're 100% correct in that she's already fabulously rich and a boycott of her works will not materially harm her. Also, she still has devoted bigoted fans who love being paypiggies, so a boycott is impossible.
You sure about that? Generally, people worth boatloads still cry about losing worth and refraining from encouraging IP's directly benefitting her could distract her or even send a message to her potential allies. It would maybe not change her ways, but it could change the platforms available to send her harmful ideas into the world.
Then for escapism, piracy is still available. π΄ββ οΈ There's also no shortage of things to do that don't concern her.
I also think that isn't worth it. You're still letting some rich moron's actions have too much sway over your mental health. What you're describing is the most tiny of marginal gains. Her IPs are already dying in relevance. Your energy would be better spent telling people about how cool some other thing is rather than how bad HP is. If someone loves HP and it makes them happy, I see no benefit to raining on their parade.
The thing is - there are millions of other things that you could find enjoyment in that don't actively harm other people.
How about, for example, the plethora of IP that JKR plagiarized to create the HP franchise? Or anything that doesn't have harmful stereotypes of various marginalized peoples? Or one that doesn't degrade women's roles in society by actively mocking main characters, or even passively by only having a grand total of 28 named women characters across over the one million words that make up the series?
Edit: apologies, I misremembered. There are 28 named women characters within the top 100 named character as listed by number of total mentions within the series.
Even if she weren't a bigot, and she didn't use her money to actively harm people using the money she makes, you would still be better off finding some other form of media to enjoy. You don't have to land on one thing and make it your personality for the rest of your life. It's okay to grow as a person especially if you're an adult.
Agreed, so why are you still worrying about Harry Potter (somehow) harming people? It's time to move on from that 90's rhetoric.
