Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
(This list may get expanded when necessary.)
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

Important detail you might miss. Conscription is not mobilisation. This conscription is biggest in some time but not that much. Euronews and other media know this is clickbait.
Putin did this to sow fear in Europe - he knows media will do everything for the clicks. Politicians who base all of their decisions on polling („centrists”) will act accordingly. This is how we are played.
It’s the N^eoliberalism^ word being at fault for all of this again.
The headline is not clickbait. It's literally just reporting the news. The story beneath it is not sensationalist, it puts the number in context better than you did.
People read headlines only, that’s a fact, just look around (like Lemmy in general). Simultaneously headlines fight for your attention because that’s the only chance to show you more ads. This is an incredibly toxic combination even if it looks okay on paper. People are kind of dumb but that’s more of a character flaw that we all share. We need to be a bit more aware of that because there’s no cure without a proper diagnosis.
you're right, but i still think the EU should arm itself at least to the point of being capable of self-defence.
it's not only about waging war, it's also about deterrence, and giving Europe some self-confidence.
In 2011 the draft was for 218000: http://www.kremlin.ru/acts/bank/32869/
Really? Because 160K doesn't seem like much at this point. I'd probably be wanting the world to not find out I need yet another chunk of guys and all I can do is 160K because all the others have completely failed and shit's getting low.
These 160K will not be sent to Ukraine. They are used for maintenance, logistics and such. They are doing this every year to replace the 160K conscripts that are done with their 12 months of military service.
This has nothing to do with the war in Ukraine. Russia has been drafting people for military service twice a year for decades. This is how countries with conscription systems work. Finland does the same thing.
Doing this after the report came out yesterday that there has been talk of them testing a NATO country, that would absolutely match your claim of this being saber rattling. It's totally in his best interest to look especially tough right now, more so with Germany showing strong mobilization the past few weeks.
He's missing about 320.000 soldiers for his summer offensive. Interesting.
Russia is missing 500 000 soldiers mobilized for this winter offensive.
What do you mean?
