The “front page” experience of seeing general news I should be aware of is getting better but it’s harder to find active niche communities as expected, and I wish there was combined or less fracturing with communities, like having to choose whether to follow technology@lemmy.ml or @lemmy.world since I would assume they’re somewhat redundant

Agree with you fully on this. Especially the fractured community's. Most of the big ones have 2 to 3 different ones and they are all active just as much as the other. Gotta chose to just follow one or all of the pieces of the puzzle. For some of the more niche community's I'm giving it a good thought on just making one of mine. I don't really want that kinda thing but not having it is lame.
