Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

What would happen if Trump decided to take it by force?

[–] Daniel55@feddit.nl 24 points 1 day ago

I believe that Germany and France issued a statement a while ago "warning" the US that borders must not be moved by force. Take from that what you will, but its hard to say.

The reality is that whilst the US would struggle immensely to launch a ground invasion into mainland Europe, the US navy is too dominant at sea for Europe to have much of a chance defending Greenland.

If they really did attempt to take it by force it would be the end of transatlantic-ism and Europe would find it self in increasing danger from its west and eastern neighbors. The only real deterrent to further encroachment at that point would be a European Army capable of seeing of threats from both Russia and the US, and likely Europe would seek new global partners.

(Mandatory: this is just my speculative opinion as an International Relations Student, not an expert.)

The vast ice sheet that covers Greenland would be the new home away from home to various Scandinavian special forces units who would habitually commit assassinations and sabotage against any occupying force. The result would be a massively asymmetric situation similar to Vietnam but in extremely cold temperatures.

Is there a reason why you suggest "various Scandinavian special forces" and a guerilla war? I find this perhaps a little far-fetched.

Greenland is part of the kingdom of Denmark. Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland have a long standing mutual defence pact separate from NATO. A direct confrontation with the United States navy would be foolish, so guerilla warfare would be a lot more beneficial. Unless Britain and France get involved of course. That would alter things somewhat.

Yea, Vietnam had three Viet Kong hiding amongst the population and in caves in a dense jungle. Not 'hiding on an ice sheet'.

I mean a long protracted conflict which the us will eventually back out of without having anything to show for it except a massive bill for destroyed equipment and a giant pr problem.

I read in some paper a while ago that the American parliament can stop an attack, but if an attack on Greenland can be done quickly enough (within 48 hours was the timespan I read mentioned) Trump could face them with a fait accompi.

This is assuming the US would be capable of having it be a complete surprise attack. In reality (in my opinion) this may not be possible, in which case the Europeans would have time to respond, and the American parliament as well. I have no idea whether they’d be able to stop an attack in advance (though Republican support would obviously be needed for that as well).
