Seems like something that's mostly just an issue in the US. I just went online and cancelled my gym membership, it was like 3 clicks and I got a confirmation email of which day was the last day of the membership. Never heard from them since.

At least in Germany most gyms have 2 year contracts, if you want to be able to cancel your membership monthly you usually pay about twice as much
