Summary

A global study reveals a rising trend of bowel cancer diagnoses among adults under 50, with the highest annual increases in countries like New Zealand, Chile, Puerto Rico, and England.

Experts suggest potential causes include junk food consumption, physical inactivity, and obesity.

While rates are still low compared to older populations, the trend is concerning. Young women in several countries experienced faster increases than men.

Researchers emphasize the need for innovative prevention strategies and increased awareness of early symptoms to address this global health issue.

Notably, two (often overlapping) ways to lower the risk of colorectal cancer are to get adequate fiber intake and to incorporate more plant-based foods into one's diet. For those with cancer or having survived cancer, evidence suggests plant-based foods can also improve prognosis.

I'd like to mention that plant-based foods doesn't mean buying beyond burgers or shit like that. that crap is horrible for you. plant-based is making meals that incorporate actual veggies. It's a big Corpo tatic they are using with these "plant-based" snack/meant alternatives and just stuffing them with horrible stuff still, making them no different than eating meat.

That's not a "corpo tactic"; the "plant-based" label is there for vegetarians and vegans who want to eat something that wasn't tortured and killed even if it's unhealthy. While there is some emerging evidence that while still not good for you, they're mildly better than eating red meat burgers, it's obviously still not good for you, and plant-based for your health should be legumes, seeds, nuts, veggies, fruits, whole grains, cereals, plant milk, etc. Plenty of plant-based stuff is bad for you; a diet consisting solely of french fries, Oreos, and soda would be plant-based.

I agree, but the majorty of people who i have seen who go on "plant-based" diets are just eating the junk food versions of plant based. they are ordering veggie meals takeout which is usually fried or made of things you have no clue what its been made with, how much salt, etc...

For me, plant based is using raw veggies, and making a meal with that. include some starches if you will, but NO premade "vegan friendly" foods. The only plant based milk i drink is hemp due to how much stuff is NOT added to it. To each their own, just how i see it.

I eat plant based because I don't want to hurt animals. That said, vegan junk food is just too expensive to eat all the time. I'm mostly just living off actual food I prepare and cook myself. Lots of veggies, rice, beans, soy, etc.

But I will demolish one of those garbage vegan pizzas in a single sitting lol

fair enough, i'm not trying to judge btw, just what my view of plant-based is. I fucking love veggies.

Too late, everyone decided they were doing carnivore with no downsides.

Edit: adding sources

Current recommendations to reduce colon cancer include the reduction or elimination of red or processed meats.

Among all cancers, colon cancer appears to have the strongest association with meat consumption

Up to 80 % of breast, bowel and prostate cancers are attributed to dietary practices, and international comparisons show strong positive associations with meat consumption.

Meat isn't causing people to become obese, it doesn't help, but it's %100 not the cause. Even the article points this out, junk food and sedimentary lifestyle is. Aka potato chips, cookies, sweets and snacks. No one is eating steak 3 times a day and get fat.

[–] EvacuateSoul@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I thought we were talking about bowel cancer, which definitely is linked to red meat and cured meat consumption.

This is from the article.

I put some sources above for you. Junk is junk for sure, but I was making a joke about how colon cancer is climbing during a movement to say even vegetables are bad and meat will keep you healthy.

Not sure if you've seen much around you, but in my area it seems to be all the rage.

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Ah, I'm not saying meat in massive quantities is good for you, nothing really is. I haven't really seen much around here that meat is healthier than veggies though. At least not since the whole Atkins diet craze a decade or so ago.

[–] 1985MustangCobra@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yes over consumption of red meat and cured meats is most likely not good for you. Just like getting drunk or smoking a pack a cigarettes, or eating a bag of chips, or a bag of M&Ms
