It'd be nice to live in a utopia where everyone who could afford to, paid for products they could just take, but let's be honest, that is not reality. I respect the devs' willingness to donate their work nonetheless.

Of course this works well enough in some places. I've been to amazing communities in Europe where they have "honesty shops" where you just take what you need and leave some cash behind and the owner just comes by to collect and restock once a day.
