Some larger stores in Germany have this. It's super annoying if you don't buy anything, and have to ask to be let out or wait until someone else leaves.

Can't you just walk out the staffed checkout aisles without a receipt, or are they receipt-gated too?

They are usually easy to push through. They have to be in case of emergency
