I bought a second car yesterday so I'm pretty stoked on that

It's not a new car by any stretch (it's 24 years old) but it's going to do a lot of work for me as a vehicle I can use for going to trails that isn't my commuter car

Awesome! I've got a 2001 Subaru that I use to get to trails. Same thing; sometimes I have to walk, but at least I'm not beating up my main car for getting the kids around.

I was initially thinking about getting a Subaru but after working on a few it really discouraged me due to the level of difficulty

Head gaskets in particular suck to swap

[–] krellor@beehaw.org 4 points 10 months ago

I got lucky in that regard I guess. My mechanic told me that I got the one model of Subaru that doesn't blow the head gasket. So fingers crossed!

Otherwise, yeah, Subaru's aren't easy to work on at home.

Might I ask what model is it?

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 10 months ago (2 children)

A 2000 Honda CRV

Most of the trails I go to aren't that intense to get to (though they can be sketchy enough road wise that I have to pull over and walk to the trail rather than drive) but my poor little Kia Rio just can't take it no more lol

WOOOOO CRV

had one o’ those a while ago, 2000 or early 2000s. Only complaint is my butt would go numb on drives over four hours. Prolly coulda fixed that with a cushion of some sort, but had to get different car.

Enjoy. I hope it treats you well.

Hmm that sounds like an interesting choice. Why did you pick it instead of a Range Rover or something?

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Costs was a big factor, including costs of insurance (a huge factor (the CRV is $35 to insure)) and costs of parts. Not to mention the costs (and availablily) of aftermarket stuff.

Plus I have a few friends who have them as well and they're very fun little SUVs

[–] GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Oh I forgot about insurance. But here where I live there's a different kind of it which is extremely cheap afaik so it's not much of a factor. And yea all of that makes sense. I'm just not a fan of SUVs I guess

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm definitely not a fan of modern SUVs which are basically tanks (like seriously you should def check this tool out to compare car sizes)

I was also looking at smaller pickups (like 1980s to 1999) but they're so bloody expensive right now locally.

I even looked at kei trucks (and almost bought one (they're street legal in my state) but changed my mind when I double checked how it would affect my insurance cost and they told me they wouldn't insure it, so I'd have to get a second insurance plan from another company and I didn't want to go through that headache.

[–] GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Bruh that insurance makes no sense. Hopefully it will die soon and finally allow people to buy cars they want

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 10 months ago

Honestly yeah

Basically they told me that because it was never originally sold (or an equivalent model) in the states they wouldn't insure it

It was pretty frustrating
