I mean if you want a more detailed explanation then sure. LPR and DPR are mostly ethnic Russians, and they wanted to separate from Ukraine after the nationalist coup in 2014. This resulted in a civil war with Ukraine regularly attacking civilian population in Donbas. This was openly reported by western media such as seen in this CNN clip, and in this French documentary.

We can also take a look at a few slides from this lecture that Mearsheimer gave back in 2015 to get a bit of background on the subject. Mearsheimer is certainly not pro Russian in any sense, and a proponent of US global hegemony. First, here's the demographic breakdown of Ukraine:

here's how the election in 2004 went:

this is the 2010 election:

As we can clearly see from the voting patterns in both elections, the country is divided exactly across the current line of conflict. Furthermore, a survey conducted in 2015 further shows that there is a sharp division between people of eastern and western Ukraine on which economic bloc they would rather belong to:

So, if you wanted to make comparisons with Gaza here then the closest analogy would be with Ukraine having the role of Israel and Donbas having the role of Gaza. Hope that helps clear things up for you.

Thanks for your reply. Although the slides above show a division within Ukraine caused by his history etc. This was ostensibly one country going to war against another for the should purpose it seems to occupy.

In the case of the Israel/Palestine conflict, this was basically a terrorist group attacking Israel and now Israel retaliating over and above what should be considered acceptable.

So why wouldn't China be more or at least just as vocal in calling for a cease fire and return to normality. Which was the basis of my original question.

I understand their are subtleties and many more parts at play, but let's just say STOP to Israel and Russia.

In the case of Israel/Palestine the story is that the west stole the land from Palestinians and gave it to Israel which became an apartheid state with the support of the west. This is an excellent introduction to the history by Dr. Finkelstein who is an eminent scholar on the subject. Israel has been committing atrocities against Palestinians this whole time, and now it's committing an open genocide. Dr. Finkelstein gives an excellent answer regarding October 7 that I encourage you to watch.

China and many other countries have called for peace, and these were blocked by the west. In fact, Ukrainians themselves now admit that they were close to reaching a peace deal with Russia that the west sabotaged:

The west is reason the war in Ukraine continues today. RAND even published a whole paper titled Extending Russia that explains the reasons for the war in detail.
