To be fair, religion is a much more abstract concept than people give it credit for.
Think early humans engaging in 'shamanistic' rituals (taking psychedelics) and trying to make sense of what they saw.
I believe a lot of the early interpretations of religion have just been bastardized by conmen and those who don't care to understand the truth.
I don't doubt it. Too bad that it then became a tool of control, eventually.
