Imagine if companies could just sue and take down products just because they could theoretically be used to view pirated content (not to pirate, but to view it).

Not Eugen or anyone else pro-facebook, but otherwise I agree.

Steal everything. Fuck these garbage pieces of shit. Galen Weston's gonna burn in hell, wearing some sweet kicks made from the flesh of all the Canadians he's killed.

If you do, I'd be interested to hear results. Deluge's plugins are nice and it's easy to make your own. If it wasn't for the performance issues, I'd likely still be there.

Yes, and I'd refute the expert in question on the merit of their points, or their qualifications, not solely based on who transcribed and reported on it. If your only argument against my entire post is that 1 website I used as a reference is Turkish, seriously, you need to work on your rhetorical skills.

As an aside, is that a traditionally animated dance scene in a pokemon show? I would not have expected such nice animation coming from pokemon.

Ya, Pokemon XY/XYZ had a whole bunch of really great animation, making great use of both traditional and CG animation. One particular change is that, while in Best Wishes, they used generic backdrops to indicate motion during attacks, like so:

Come XY/XYZ they used fully rendered 3D backdrops during attacks, with complex battle choreography and a consistent, full field of view as the Pokemon navigate the entire arena during attacks,. They also make a lot of use of depth and motion in the action sequences, and even 360 degree shots.

After XYZ, Pokemon Sun and Moon completely changed the art direction to be a much less modeled, restricted one. XY/XYZ was one last big hurrah for the traditional style of Ash Ketchum and Pokemon anime that we all grew up with, and the animators delivered quality in spades. It's by far the best animated of that traditional style.

Also thanks for the note about the footnotes thing. I never use the apps, so didn't know that they don't handle the markdown properly.

Ya, my only issue with Deluge is after ~500 torrents it starts to slow. I'm on private trackers, so I always tend to have ~2,000 torrents seeding at once. For my particular usecase, it simply becomes too slow and bogged down to be viable.

Granted, I've not used Deluge in some 2 or 3 years; maybe they improved process handling since then? I'd love to be corrected if so.

By the UN definition, Hamas is a genocidal organisation

The UN does not define "genocidal organisation", but instead defines genocide. Does an organization who intends to commit genocide meet the definition of a genocidal organization, or would it be an organization who has both the will and the means to, or would it be an organization who is committing genocide? That's not defined by the UN and the nuance of that is very important to the claim.

Its founding charter, published in 1988, explicitly commits it to obliterating Israel. Article 7 states that “The Day of Judgment will not come about until Moslems fight Jews and kill them”. Article 13 rejects any compromise, or peace, until Israel is destroyed.

Here's the charter. In the preamble it states "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it". The particular translation I'm using of this document has it written as "The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees." I don't speak arabic and as such cannot comment if perhaps it's simply that the term they use for "fight" is also one that explicitly means to kill as well, or what, but the second part does make clear that the intent is to eventually oppress the Jewish people and send them into hiding.

I'd recommend reading through the entire document if you have time.

Does this invalidate the subject upon which they're reporting, i.e. does this invalidate Neve Gordon's opinion that Israel's painting Palestinians as animals to justify their warcrimes?

[–] ram 44 points 1 year ago

As long as it's optional, I think it's great. It lets me play smash bros with friends who do tournaments. It lets me play, too, with literal children who are gonna have a hard time doing much of anything.

[–] ram 18 points 1 year ago (4 children)

There is little evidence that Israel, like Hamas, “intends” to destroy an ethnic group—the Palestinians

This particular line I keep seeing parroted. Yes, Hamas has said they wish to eradicate an ethnic group. Yes, that is egregious. No, that does not mean their rebellion against the occupying, more powerful force, is a genocide.

Beyond that, Israel has said "we are fighting against animals", painting Palestinians as inhuman to legitimize their warcrimes. While one may argue that they were just talking about Hamas, it's obvious that Hamas is composed of Palestinians, and while not elected by the Palestinians of today, represent them.

But to my initial point, the occupying force, physically erasing a people and systemically erasing their culture and ability to congregate and form community is genocide. Regardless of Hamas. They have the means, and they are enacting that means.

Dragon Ball Daima, a new series based on Akira Toriyama’s beloved manga series, is set to release in fall 2024.

Xitter user @dbshype posted a video from New York Comic Con showing the teaser for Dragon Ball Daima, which features Sheron, as well as Goku and Vegeta becoming children, which is giving me major Dragon Ball GT vibes. You can watch the video below, though fair warning: There’s a lot of swearing and shouting. You can’t really hear the trailer, so I recommend keeping your sound off to save your ears.

DRAGON BALL DAIMA ANIME OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED!

Fall 2024

Pictures
— Hype (@DbsHype) October 12, 2023

No specific release date for Dragon Ball Daima was given beyond fall 2024. More information is set to be revealed sooner rather than later. However, @dbshype was able to confirm that Toriyama is involved in the production.

Created by Toriyama, Dragon Ball began serialization in 1984. Since then, the franchise has grown into one of the most popular anime series of all time, with various films, tie-in video games, and other media. I myself am a massive fan of the Dragon Ball franchise, like so many other men my age, and credit it with getting me into the world of anime. I’ve covered it pretty extensively at other outlets, and you better believe I’m going to do that here at The Escapist until they tell me politely, but firmly, to stop.

The news, though, may come as a disappointment to some fans. Dragon Ball Super, which aired from 2015 until 2018, was generally well-received by fans. However, it seems now like the series is unlikely to ever return. It also appears that many of the stories that have since taken place in the manga, like an arc involving the deadly intergalactic villain Moro, will not end up getting adapted for the screen, at least not yet.

Dragon Ball Daima is slated for release in fall 2024.

Describing it as part of an “all-out offensive” to promote the French language in Quebec and “halt the decline in Montreal,” a Legault government task force will seek to increase tuition fees for foreign or out-of-province students attending English-language universities in Quebec.

“We’re fed up with managing a decline, of protecting the language, of slowing the erosion of the language, these are defensive terms. It’s time to regain ground,” Quebec French-language minister Jean-François Roberge said in an interview with La Presse. “If we want to change the linguistic profile of Montreal, to stop the decline in Montreal, we must focus on the question of rebalancing university networks.”

Roberge said that while 80 per cent of Quebec students attend French-language universities, only half of the 32,000 foreign or out-of-province students who study here do so as well.

“There are a lot of people who come to Quebec, who attend an English-language university and who very often express themselves in the English language on a daily basis.”

The task force also intends to table legislation that would oblige online giants such as Spotify and Netflix to make Quebec-produced content “more visible.”

Roberge’s announcement comes a little over a week after the Coalition Avenir Québec suffered a stinging defeat at the hands of the Parti Québécois in a byelection in the Quebec City riding of Jean-Talon.

News Media Canada, the organization representing some of the country’s largest news organizations, is urging the federal government to accommodate Google’s specific concerns regarding Bill C-18, the Online News Act.

The legislation is scheduled to take effect Dec. 19, creating an urgent deadline in the showdown between Google and Ottawa.

The bill was inspired by a similar law in Australia and is aimed at encouraging large platforms such as Google and Facebook to strike licensing deals with publishers. Smaller publishers would be encouraged to bargain collectively in an effort to address power imbalances.

Google and Facebook have strongly opposed the bill, describing it as unworkable. Facebook has already removed Canadian news from its platform in order to avoid falling under the terms of the legislation.

Google responded^[^^archive.org^^]^ to the government’s draft regulations Friday, raising a host of concerns. The company said it would follow through on plans to pull Canadian news entirely unless the final version of the regulations address its concerns. The company has also expressed skepticism that such issues can even be addressed through regulation. It has called on the government to start over with an entirely new bill.

News Media Canada, which represents publishers such as The Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, Postmedia and La Presse, does not support starting over. It said in a statement to The Globe that the government should address Google’s concerns through the final version of its regulations.

“Google’s submission is a welcome, clear, constructive, good faith articulation of legitimate concerns. We are in agreement with many of the issues they have raised,” said Paul Deegan, News Media Canada’s president and chief executive officer.

“We are aligned that there should be a firm ceiling, rather than a floor on financial liability. We also agree that eligible publishers must have an online presence, non-monetary measures such as training and product can be part of the remuneration, and parties need incentives to enter into negotiation, rather than holding out. We are ready to sit down and work through the detail of these issues before the regulations are finalized. Google plays an essential role in helping Canadians find trusted news sources, and we are confident there is a path forward for the company and publishers to continue what has been a mutually beneficial relationship for many years to come.”

The statement represents a significant olive branch from large publishers, who have generally been supportive of the government’s original proposals.

In its submission on Friday, Google Canada repeated its position that Bill C-18 is based on “a fundamentally flawed premise” that platforms such as Google are unfairly profiting from the sharing of news.

The company said the eligibility criteria for news businesses are “vague, expansive and often inconsistent, allowing some businesses to benefit even if they do not produce news content or adhere to journalistic standards.”

The draft regulations include exemption provisions in which, as in Australia, platforms could operate outside of the new rules if they independently strike agreements with publishers. But Google said these provisions are also too vague and broad.

“This is a fundamental difference between the Act and the Australian News Media Bargaining Code,” Google said.

Furthermore, Google’s submission takes issue with the draft regulations for not setting financial limits on a platform’s obligations.

“We continue to have significant concerns that the core issues ultimately may not be solvable through regulations and that legislative changes may be necessary,” the company said.

A spokesperson for Google declined to comment Thursday on News Media Canada’s latest statement.

A spokesperson for Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge said the office would respond later on Thursday.

Israel’s decision to deprive Palestinian civilians living in Gaza of access to basic needs violates international law, former Human Rights Watch chief Kenneth Roth said.

“In the realm of humanitarian necessities, the Israeli government has imposed a siege on all of Gaza,” Roth said in an interview with Al Jazeera.

Roth, who now teaches at Princeton University, added that the atrocities committed by the Hamas armed group against Israeli civilians do not justify the “revenge” and “collective punishment” against Palestinian civilians.

“A basic premise of international humanitarian law is that war crimes by one side never justify war crimes by the other. There’s an independent obligation by both sides to respect the laws of war.

“It increasingly does look like the Israel military is proceeding without adequate care to spare civilians. And that kind of indiscriminate and disproportionate attack … is in itself a war crime.”
