moreover, i think it's just weird that everyone expects generative ai to be as open and useful and free as it has been. it's all to get us to trust and use it unknowingly, then they're gonna start jacking the prices up. we've seen it before with cable television, internet, consumer goods like shoes and computer parts, and more. open source efforts have gone a long way, but it's still all a tinkerers' hobby, not a viable alternative.

Yeah, honestly, the way things are set up isn't perfect. I maintain a few accounts on different instances just to fan out what content I get. The Fedi is always gonna have issues with moderation and federation, I just don't see it as a good enough reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I have watched people discover Darknet markets for years now, and the most common line of thinking that I see whenever someone tries good cocaine for the first time is "I wish I could sustain this feeling for longer, and cheaper."
