Reminds me of the post from the cat owner who hear a noise and first reaction was, "I'm going to shove my finger so far up your little asshole!" because they thought their cat was up to mischief again only to later realize they unintentionally scarred a burglar for life.

Why is that something that someone would say to a cat??

Exactly, I feel scarred myself now.

Exploding Head Syndrome

I am just relieved that it's not a syndrome in which your head just decides to randomly explode.

I believe that's Scanners Syndrome

Just a few clips of that movie scarred me as a child. Of course, so did the fembots.

Easy to diagnose, but hard to study.

From this I'm getting that an excellent anti-burglar system would be a motion-triggered voice that screams obscenities at the burglar. A long time ago somebody suggested playing the sound of a shotgun being racked. Seems like a similar idea.

I get those, but so rare that they still startle the shit out of me. Can't describe the sound, since it's all in my head. Not a sharp crack like a pistol, not a boom like a shotgun, not a crash like falling pots, not even in between, but every bit as loud.

Had it happen enough to be, "THE FU-! Oh. Whew. Just one of those things again. Back to the tinnitus." (In a perverted way, I kinda dig the tinnitus. Not crippling like it is for many, just, "Neat! There it go again!", and then my brain tunes it out.
