"I know why, and it's because my president is threatening to annex your country."

It's far more than that. The Trump administration is lawless, ignoring and defying the courts, and trampling on the constitution. My son's school just cancelled a long planned trip to New York City because of the very real risk that one of more of the children in the trip might be held, handcuffed, and thrown in ICE detention for days or weeks. Under the current authoritarian regime it is unsafe for anyone to travel to the US.

The annexation threats and tariffs just caused people to stop booking, the massively increased chance of being detained is what's causing the cancellations.

Yeah, if Canadians had the character to withhold their vacation dollars over the unacceptable behaviour of the US government, they would have stopped going there 20 years ago. The only difference is that now you risk being summarily thrown in a gulag even if you don't look stereotypically middle-eastern.

None of that unquestionable behaviour was their President literally stating that we should be annexed, however.

I will return to New York, one day. I loved visiting the Big Apple. But not now. Not unless Trump is out of the office, in prison, or both.

Just because random extrajudicial kidnappings by ICE aren't happening to everyone, doesn't mean it can't happen to anyone.

I won’t feel safe enough to go back ever. Even if all the politicians get voted out or imprisoned the ICE and CBP agents who are kidnapping people will still be employed.

Trump is just a symptom of a much larger problem. The U.S. is federally fucked and will remain so for a long time - I don't see myself ever going back again.

I find it hilarious when you see Palm Springs trying to lure Canadians back. Florida, and Palm Springs in particular, is a hotbed of Trump support. The leopards migrated there and are busy eating faces.

MAGA had a hardon for cruelty. They want us to just take the abuse and smile and thank them for letting us spend our money in their city. Fuck that.
