Before we get to that point, it's a better idea for government and business leaders to communicate with their American partners to have them put pressure on Trump and his advisors to avoid those tariffs in the first place.

And the Canadian government is already doing that. They've been planning contingencies since (at least) the US primaries.

.

Of course, they're not going to send out a press release detailing those plans - it would be stupid to alert the very people you'll be negotiating with to the details of all your plans.

Because trump is known for having proper discussions and making smart decisions that benefit people other then himself.

Well, when he renegotiated Nafta to USMCA it benefited Canada and Mexico more than him and the states....

He does make the best deals after all.

Canada tells me we he had the best discussion ever, in the history of trade deals, believe me!

Of course he isn't.

But there have to be some saner self-interested people in his orbit that realize how much a trade war will fuck up their profits.

Would be nice to massively attract their highly skilled workers

We can tariff their imports if we want to do equal damage while we destroy each other.

A system wide tariff on Canada would be a self-own by Trump as he gets so much oil from Canada. It would make literally everything in the US more expensive.

Oil is a global commodity though. The market would have to adjust by forcing the US to import from elsewhere and us to sell to others. Our systems are very integrated though ( specialized refining / pipelines ) so it would be painful and expensive for both of us.

What is the conservative party plan on tariffs? Probably bending over and holding up a jar of lube...
