The anarchy symbol rebelliously displayed on a rear projection screen, the pride of the A/V department, in a ballroom of a Hamilton Suites lobby somewhere. My youth recoils in horror.

[–] TheFriar@lemm.ee 28 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

And these fuckers aren’t anarchists. They’re asshole right wingers who think they want companies to have even more power because they read ayn Rand once.

This country needs more than two parties. But these assholes? What the fuck, USA?

[–] Seasm0ke@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

We can thank Murray rothbard and Milton Friedman for that gem. Rothbard openly coopted anarchism in Anatomy of the state and mixed it with Austrian economics woo woo

I have this cool keychain that says "be the change" but the A in "change" is the Anarchy A.

Am I gonna have to stop wearing that?

If you’re asking permission, then yes.

Trump did sometimes earn cheers from the crowd, including when he talked about ending wars, pardoning Jan. 6 protesters, protecting cryptocurrency, denying money to schools with vaccine or mask mandates, and defunding diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. The most applause came when he promised to commute the life sentence of Ross Ulbricht, who has been imprisoned for operating a website that sold illegal goods.

So this should tell you where libertarians stand on. A sandwich of two things worth cheering for and a whole lot of disgusting things to cheer for in the middle.

[–] mercano@lemmy.world 13 points 7 months ago

It’s not like I would trust a Trump campaign promise anyway.

[–] PrincessLeiasCat@sh.itjust.works 8 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Wait - Libertarians have soured on crypto? I must have missed that.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 43 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Other way around. They want crypto to be protected from government interference.

[–] PrincessLeiasCat@sh.itjust.works 10 points 7 months ago

Ooohhh…that makes more sense, thanks!

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

And Trump is bullshitting anyways, as usual.

"Bitcoin, it just seems like a scam," Mr Trump said. "I don't like it because it's another currency competing against the dollar."

Bitcoiners remember this shit because they keep mental lists of who to annoy each time there's a price rally. Trump was anti-bitcoin when it mattered most. And Biden's has been the most pro-crypto administration so far, including when Trump was in office. The SEC just approved a huge Ethereum ETF.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

Well yeah. Crypto guys are DEDICATED to it. It would be like if I came over to your house, 3 years ago, called your wife a whore in front of everybody, and set fire to her tampons box.

Then 3 years later I stop by uninvited to a different party honoring your wife getting power within the city. I tell everybody how great your wife is, and I'm baffled why I'm being asked to leave. All of you remember. Whereas I'm not sure I'd ever met you before.

A sandwich of two things worth cheering for

...why is defunding diversity, equity, and inclusion programs worth cheering for?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

The two things worth cheering for would be the beginning- ending wars, and the end- commuting Ross Ulbricht's sentence.

Hence it being a sandwich.

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 months ago

Lmao, my bad. I parsed that sentence separately from the rest of the list (which was all one sentence).

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 47 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Gotta admit, him saying, "keep getting your 3% every 4 years, maybe you don't want to win." was pretty lmao

[–] ashok36@lemmy.world 17 points 7 months ago (3 children)

The biggest reason trump won in 2016 was, apart from Clinton's unfavorables, his sense of humor. He could throw out zingers and also be surprisingly self deprecating.

His problem is that no one was in the mood for any humor in 2020 as he had royally fucked up covid and now in 2024 he's obviously in mental decline. He's still good for a quip once in a while but he's not nearly as funny now as he used to be and way less funny than he thinks he is.

Biden, meanwhile, for better or worse is exactly the same now as he was four years ago. A little more soft spoken maybe but he hasn't changed nearly as much as Trump has.

[–] IzzyScissor@lemmy.world 19 points 7 months ago

He was surprisingly good at creating devastating nicknames for people that would cut them down to a single flaw. A lot of his path wasn't to be the best candidate, but to ruin everyone else's reputations.

But now when he's falling asleep in his criminal trial on almost a daily basis, it's hard for quips like "Sleepy Joe" to have the same effect. Or when he's asking for Biden to be drug tested before the debate when he's the one with the White House that was referred to as being "awash in speed". It's always been projection, but he isn't able to distract everyone fast enough anymore.

[–] nova_ad_vitum@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

When has he ever been self-depracating ?

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Only at the Al Smith dinner in NYC in 2016. And someone wrote those jokes for him.

For a bit of context. Inviting Trump was decided on by the party leaders and was not a popular choice with most of the delegates who were worried it would send a confusing signals to people not familiar with the party. Trump was also able to sneak a lot of his MAGA supporters into the convention for the speech. They tried to sit up front to make it look like Trump was popular there but they were forced to sit in the back. So any claims about cheering should be take with some salt.

[–] TheFriar@lemm.ee 18 points 7 months ago (3 children)

“MAGA=socialist”

Does nothing mean anything anymore?

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 6 points 7 months ago

"Libertarians" have worked very, very hard to see that nothing does, starting with the word libertarian. That isn't out of nowhere, it is quite literally a political strategy.

[–] vga@sopuli.xyz 4 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Perhaps it's the good old "nazis are socialists" meme. I mean they're clearly at least half right: maga are nazis.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

'Socialist' means anyone who thinks taxes are worth paying for anything ever, I guess.

[–] Hobbes_Dent@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago

“I told you so.”

- No one in the Party out loud
