Telegram is just actually superior in terms of features I don't get it.

  1. Whatsapp is more popular.
  2. It has a lot of scammers. Especially crypto scammers.
  3. A little bit more difficult to use. There are so many features and it can kind lf get overwhelming.
  4. Messages are not end to end encrypted by default.

Because an instant messaging platform is only useful if there are people to, well, message on it. WhatsApp has the userbase worldwide, telegram does not.

Because latin americans are way too brainwashed to use it. (source: i can't get any of my friends or family to use telegram)

When it comes to person to person messaging, everyone uses what everyone else uses.

Personally? Because telegram feels dodgier than WhatsApp. At least I can trust WhatsApp enough around security. If I really want to upgrade my privacy or freedom, I would have chosen either Matrix, Signal or Session.
