High chances you're using cloudflare dns. Google for cloudflare archive.is to find out more.

huh... so from what i can read cloudflare isn't necessarily being the bad guy here? they have clear and reasonable policy reasons for their practices, it's archive.is that's digging their heals in over a certain communication protocol not used by cloudflare?

That’s my take too. I use DoH and to work around this I created a hosts file with some archive sites.
