For about month now I have been massive movie rut.. struggling to find anything to watch. What do you do when you are in one of these slumps!?

The same thing I do with video games: backlog and obscure media hunting. Nothing is too old to consider.

There's always something old I hadn't found the last time I went looking. Fan translations or edits included. I lurk originaltrilogy forums.

When that fails I go outside.

I used to think nothing was too old to consider with video games, until I started playing some old shit I loved from the early 3D days recently. I can't will my brain to get used to the wildly wonky controls a lot of games had back in the late 90's/early 2000's, before the modern standards were really dialed in. 🤣

Oh video games are a different story yeah. I can handle weird legacy control schemes, but I'm usually just bored by what I'm looking at, and that'll make me quit first. The further back you go, the more absolute that becomes. Never completely, I have exceptions from any console that I'd argue are timeless.

edit: I guess because the exceptions did something I hadn't seen before, or nailed what they were going for. Not every idea gets done to death, some are left behind.

But even if that's a narrow selection of stuff, I keep finding new weird old games to play.

Like I just dsicovered Garage by Kinotrope and I'm having a blast.

Sort by first added, unwatched.

Yeah I watched This Gun for Hire (1942) last night and it was fantastic. Hopefully the Slump is coming to an end!

I take a break from watching movies and read/audiobook or something else instead.

Recently, it's been listening to audiobooks while sharpening all my kitchen knives.

Recently, it’s been listening to audiobooks while sharpening all my kitchen knives.

This sounds so ominous lol

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Respect for taking good care of your kitchen knives my dude. 👊

Try foreign cinema. I find it refreshing to watch movies from other countries, where their different perspective and different ideas of what's important day-to-day can be really enlightening. Especially watch movies from countries you may have an underlying prejudice against to see the human side of it.

[–] Danjinspear@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Yeah always love a foreign film..think I just burnt myself out last year. Need to get back on the horse!

When I'm in a movie rut, I revisit few of my favorites that I haven't seen in a while.

[–] Danjinspear@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Yeah I did that worked through a few Pacino movies I love. Maybe time to hit some others up.

I think taking a break is good but if you don't want to do that i find making a watch list on plex/jellyfin of my backlog and using the shuffle function to just pick something and force myself to watch it. Take the choice out of the equation.

[–] Danjinspear@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Haha I have so much unwatched on my Plex it is unreal. It could be a viable option! Didn't know I could shuffle like that. So that's cool!

[–] lordnikon@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Yeah I use the watchlist on plex for more than just stuff on plex as you can select what streaming services you have pick a show off of them it's my one stop shop for everything streaming or even coming soon or in theaters. Also remember to get your library card as they have streaming as well.

Look for stuff from the past. Like have you watched Klute? Or the original Poseidon Adventure? What about old black and white films from the 40’s and 50’s? The back catalogs are where the real gems are.

Even some old stinkers can be fun from time to time. Cat Ballou is objectively not a great film, but I enjoyed it recently ... currently working my way through Lethal Weapon (just finished 2), which again is patchy in almost every way!

A change is as good as a rest, as they say.

[–] Danjinspear@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

First of Lethal Weapon 1-4 are master pieces.

Secondly Cat Ballou was a great watch and if you enjoyed not I suggest Paint Your Wagon!

[–] SharkWeek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 days ago

The script, plot, most of the supporting acting, and directing of certainly the first two Lethal Weapons could have been so much better ... I'm going to see how 3 does soon, though the last time I saw that was in a cinema, lol

I'll add Pairnt Your Wagon to the list, thanks for the suggestion :-)

[–] Danjinspear@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I love 40s & 50s. Huge Bogart, Cagney, Hitchcock and McMurray fan. I am open to any and all suggestions you have for that era as I feel I have watched a lot of the good stuff that's just there for the taking.

You may be on to something though. A Noir marathon may be beckoning.

I just watched Godzilla Minus One on Netflix last night. And Furiosa before that. I had been wanting to watch these movies for a while now and the opportunity presented itself.

Aside from that, I rewatched Stranger Things because I wanted to watch seasons 3 and 4 as I'd never watched them before. I'm thinking about checking out that show Adolescence cause I've been hearing good things about it.

If I can't decide on a movie to watch, I'll try to find something actiony where I don't have to think as much. Do not watch Geostorm for this reason though; it's too dumb to be enjoyable even as a bad movie.

[–] Danjinspear@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Thankfully I have already ridden the Geostorm train.

I watched Adolescence and enjoyed it.

I have tried numerous brainless action flicks but nothing is doing it. Maybe need to give myself a challenge and just power through. Or just take a break.

I tend to go back to Roger eberts great movies. Or pick a director / actor I like and pick something I haven’t seen. Even if it’s not great it’s usually worth a watch.
