Using a VPN with Tor is like only paying with cash because it's more anonymous but only shopping at Target

Depending on your usage of a VPN, it can help your anonymity, but it’s very much not necessary.

Can you extend this metaphor to help me understand the issue? I was getting signed up with mullvad, and they have a tor browser. I'll be honest that I dont really get it.
